I stretch out a hand to my brother, and he pulls back, tucking his phone into his chest. “Tim? Give me the phone.”

He shakes his head and steps away from me, “What’s it going to be? Let her go, or I’ll have her fired in front of her colleagues.”

There is a glint in his eyes that makes him look completely deranged. He’s so stuck in his sick obsession with Chloe that he doesn’t mind destroying her life or my reputation as long as it gets her away from me.

I have to act quickly.

“Fine, I’ll break up with her,” I lie through my teeth. I need to make sure Chloe is out of the danger first. Even if it means playing along for the time being.

Tim’s expression doesn’t change, “You’ll do what?”

I take in a deep breath and say the words to change the entire course of this situation, “I’ll break up with Chloe. And then, I’ll ask her to move out of my house.”

Chapter 24

Chloe

Simmons Demons

I hum a happy tune to myself as I complete the final touch-up on the software we’re showing to the investors. It’s still in the development stage, and I just want to keep going to complete the project, but Kane says we have to get feedback first from the investors who want a good return on their investment.

According to Kane, the investors can be very blunt, so we have to be careful not to make mistakes when presenting the idea at the meeting.

Eric and Luke are working with me to review the presentation. From my peripheral vision, I notice the team lead, Eric, sneaking glances at me.

Finally, he decides to speak out, “You seem excited.”

I pause my humming to reply, “I spent a couple of sleepless nights coming up with this idea. Of course, I’m excited to show it to the world.”

Luke snorts, “And by the world, you mean a bunch of mean-looking investors.”

“Potato-potato.”

I’m one hundred percent not looking forward to standing before several ill-reputed strangers to talk about my latest idea. But I have to cover up the fact that my excitement is coming from how well things are going between Kane and me.

Ever since my birthday, when I confessed my feelings for him, I’ve felt myself open up to him in ways I never imagined I could. Loving him is so effortless, and knowing he feels the same way, there’s no word to describe it.

“Hey, I don’t know if you guys notice, but Kane has been acting all weird recently,” Luke comments. I don’t miss the pointed look he sends my way. “Like he has become a teddy bear all of a sudden.”

Eric just shrugs, “I don’t notice anything about him unless I have to.”

I try my best to act nonchalant, “Maybe he’s just excited about the prospects of launching another great product. I can imagine the millions he’s going to make when it launches.”

Luke insists, looking back and forth between us, “He rakes in millions every week. The promise of a hundred more isn’t enough to change his entire personality overnight.”

I decide to test the waters, “What do you think could be the reason, then?”

He smiles as if to say, ‘Now that’s a good question.’

“I think he is seeing someone,” he states plainly, his eyes holding mine steadily. He may be on to us, but as long as he’s without any evidence, I’m safe.

"Oh really?" I feign surprise. "Do you know who it is?"

He stares at me for a while longer before looking away and shaking his head, “No, I don’t. He’s good at keeping his privacy.”

Eric sighs, “It’s definitely going to be a smoking hot model.”

Or a software programmer.
