I shake my head at how little he knows Kane and reach out for my flash drive. It’s not here, and I start to panic, but I remember that I lent it to Kane some time back.

“I’ll be right back, guys,” I announce, rising to my feet. I leave the office and make my way over to Kane’s. I reach for the doorknob and start to twist it before my ears catch voices coming from inside.

It sounds like people arguing.

Curious, I lean in, placing my ear closer to the door, and listen.

“What’s it going to be?” My eyes widen at the sound of Tim’s voice.

“Let her go, or I’ll have her fired in front of her colleagues.”

What? Who is he talking about?

There is silence for a while until Kane breaks it, “Fine, I’ll do it.”

He sounds deeply troubled, and I instantly become alert. Whatever it is he’s agreeing to, he is certainly hesitant to do so.

“You’ll do what?” Tim urges.

Kane sucks in a breath so deep, I hear it from out here. I know I’m not supposed to be eavesdropping, but my curiosity has been piqued too much not to. Besides, it’s Tim. For all I know, he’s about to cause some trouble.

The words I hear from Kane’s mouth aren’t what I ever imagined I would hear.

“I’ll break up with Chloe and tell her to move out of my house.”

My blood turns to ice.

What did I just hear him say?

He wants to break up with me and kick me and my daughter out of his house?

Why?

My heart sinks down to my stomach, and I feel nauseous at once. Why did Kane say that? Why would he do that to me?

He loves me.

I start to breathe fast, and my vision goes blurry for a second. I feel nauseous, but I hold it in.

I’ll tell her to move out of my house.

Nothing about this makes any sense, and I’m going to get my answers. I twist the knob and throw the door open, barging in to see the Simmons brothers standing face-to-face with each other.

My eyes gloss over from Tim, who wears an unreadable look, to Kane, who's standing with his back to the door. His shoulders are slanted to the ground, and when he turns around to find me standing in his office, he looks totally in shock. And guilt. The guilt of getting caught.

My voice is quiet when I demand, “You don’t want to be with me anymore, and you want me out of your house?”

Chapter 25

Kane

Tough Decisions

Her voice is so small and filled with grief. Her doe eyes are large and distressed, and her lower lip trembles uncontrollably.

She heard. But judging by her expression, she didn’t hear the entire conversation.

“Answer me, Kane,” she urges in that low, aggrieved tone.
