“Chloe…”

Her face crumples, “I’m sorry too. I should have listened. I should have put myself in your shoes, but I backed you into a corner instead.”

I offer a tentative smile, “It’s all in the past. What’s important to me is that you’re here and you’re okay.”

In all honesty, that was my biggest worry. I hoped she found the job right away to take care of herself and Skye. Little did I know she was responsible for another baby. My baby.

“You’re an amazing software engineer. It’s no wonder Sadie Anderson hired you,“ I tell her, and she smiles back.

“I was a mess during the interview, though,” she narrates, “I think she hired me because she pitied me. “

That’s my Chloe. Too modest to save her life.

“And for the record, we’re not copying from your software," she starts to say, but I interject to take the words out of her mouth, "I know. Same developer, but different software.”

I reach out to cup her face, overwhelmed with emotions, “So, will you forgive me? Will you come back to me?” I've never been this vulnerable, but I don’t care. As long as I’m vulnerable to her.

She lets out a sound between a laugh and a sob as she holds my face also, “Oh Kane…there’s nothing to forgive. You were hurt just as much as I was.”

Her shoulders start to shake, and I pull her close, the bulge of her belly rubbing against mine. I place a hand on her grown belly and feel the broken pieces of my heart meld back together.

I love her with all my life, and I’ll be damned if I let anything come between us ever again.

“I love you so much, Chloe,” I whisper, unable to stop the tears. She cries quietly but reaches up to wipe the tears off my face.

“I love you too, Kane,” she whispers before lifting herself on her tiptoes to kiss me.

Chloe

Our Family Of Four

Two Months Later

“Hey, wait up!”

I call after Kane as I struggle to catch up to him. My belly, the size of a large watermelon, is responsible for my slowness, but oh well, I’m already doing enough work growing a baby.

“Where are we even going?” I ask, huffing, “I swear I feel like we’ve been walking for an hour.”

Ahead of me, Kane calls back, “We’re almost there.” He waits for me to catch up and reaches out to thread our fingers together. The grass crunches under us as we stroll along the lawn to the surprise Kane claims to have for me.

Soon enough, we arrive near the top of the hill in the park, and within two steps, I see the most beautiful sight. It’s a picnic set up on the grass under a huge oak tree. There is a basket on it as well as what looks like a bottle of wine.

I raise an eyebrow, and Kane kisses me on the cheek, “It’s grape juice, don’t worry.”

We approach the picnic blanket, and Kane sits down effortlessly, but it takes a minute for me to finally sit down on it. Kane pours out the grape juice and hands me a glass.

I sip it, relishing the sweet taste. “This is really good.”

He hums and looks down at his glass. He has been acting weird all day, looking really nervous.

“What’s up with you?” I ask, watching him gulp down his drink.

He doesn’t say anything. Instead, he reaches for my arms to help me up.

He’s acting so strange, and I demand, this time more urgently, “Kane? What’s wrong?”
