He bends down to pick up something from the basket before sinking down to a knee. When he lifts a small box up to me, I cover my mouth with my hands, gasping.

Kane looks up at me, and I see the intense emotions in his eyes.

He clears his throat and starts, “I apologize if I was acting strange earlier. I was trying to gather courage for this. I love you with all my heart. I don’t know where our life is going to take us, but what I do know is that I want to be by your side forever,” he swallows and opens the box to reveal a beautiful diamond ring.

Tears well up in my eyes, but I try blinking them away.

“Chloe Smith, will you be my wife?”

I don’t have to wait. I nod, whispering, “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you.”

He looks so relieved as he slides the diamond on my finger and stands up to kiss me gently. My heart is so full, and I squeal into the kiss, jumping lightly.

We’re getting married!

Kane laughs as well and steps back, looking down at me with the most tender, loving expression.

“Thank you for making me the luckiest man on earth, Chloe.”

I start to smile when I feel a dull pain in my back and lower belly. I try to ignore it, but it happens again and again. It’s my second time having a child, and instantly, I know what's happening.

“Kane?”

He notices my change in expression, and the worry immediately replaces the joy on his face, “What’s wrong?”

“The baby is coming.”

My joints ache like never before, and I’m covered in sweat. But the discomforts recede when the nurse places my baby in my arms.

I sob as I kiss his little head, breathing in his baby scent.

I have a son.

As I bond with my baby, the doors burst open, and Kane marches in, looking equally as exhausted. In his hand is a glass of water I asked for a minute ago while I was still pushing the baby.

His eyes grow wide when he sees the bundle in my arms, and he rushes over to sit beside me on the bed.

“Here, take him,” I hand over our son to his father and watch as Kane presses his forehead to the boy’s forehead. He’s whispering something, and I lean closer to hear him say the name Caleb over and over again.

Caleb Jackson Simmons.

The doors open again, and this time, it’s my mom, Fiona, and Skye.

My mom and Fiona let out a screech as they rush to hug me quickly before taking a turn to hold the baby. Skye looks confused as to what’s happening, so Kane picks her up and holds her next to her brother so she can take a closer look at him.

A nurse comes in with the documents, and Kane fills them out. After he hands them back, he turns to me with a beam, "I have a surprise for you."

He reaches into his bag to grab another document and hands it over to me. I take the document and glance through it before letting out a gasp of delight.

I snap my head up to him, “Is this what I think it is?”

He nods, “It is.”

I look back down at the paper and its legal documentation for Kane to adopt Skye. Tim has forfeited his paternal rights so that Kane can be Skye’s father legally.

“How did you get him to sign?” I ask in wonder, and he replies,

“Truthfully, it wasn’t hard. He knew he hadn’t been a good father to Skye, and one good thing he could do for his daughter was to sign the document so I could be Skye’s father. Tim signed the document without fighting.”
