My assistant zones out for a few seconds before nodding thoughtfully, “That makes sense,” he nudges me, “I have a feeling you could use that as a response to the investors.”
We arrive at the top floor, and everyone gets out of the elevator. As we disperse, I’m forced to let go of Chloe, but make sure to send her a wink before parting. Mike walks me up to my office, and we finalize the last-minute preparations for the important meeting that will be held later today.
He leaves for his office, and I enter mine, only to be welcomed by the sight of Tim lounging in my chair behind my desk. When he hears me come in, he looks up, and his expression is dreadfully blank.
He’d better be here to apologize.
“What are you doing here?” I demand, walking towards him.
His eyes zone in on a spot on my face–no doubt the fading bruise from the punch he gave me, and he looks away.
I stand over him with my arms up, ready in the event that I need to defend myself from him again, and I bark, “This is my office. What are you doing here?”
He stares me in the eyes and responds, “Tell me to leave then.”
I glare at him, jaws clenching.
“Come on, big brother,” he dares, eyes flashing, “Call security and kick me out of your office.”
My body vibrates with anger. I take in a deep breath to try to calm down. He knows I won’t do that. Maybe it’s my weakness, but I can’t just kick my brother out of the office.
Tim scoffs, his voice riddled with mockery, “That’s what I thought. You’re too ‘good’ of a brother to kick me out. Now, imagine you remembered that when you went after my woman.”
My blood starts to boil.
“She’s not yours!” I snarl, slamming a fist down on the desk, “When will you realize that this isn’t a pissing contest? Chloe and I are in love and…”
“That’s not true!” He yells, jumping to his feet and coming up to my face, “She loved me first. I don’t know what you’ve been filling her head with, but I promise you that somewhere in there, she still wants me.”
A cynical laugh comes out of me, “That’s right. Keep deluding yourself.”
“The only one deluding himself here is you, Kane,” he snaps, taking a step back, “But you’re right; this isn’t a pissing contest. We’re brothers first, after all.”
My hackles rise in suspicion. He’s being so patronizing suddenly, and I want to know what kind of game he’s playing.
“No one should come between us,” he utters, cocking his head to the side, “That’s why we both have to let her go.”
I go rigid.What?
He drops the bombshell, “Fire Chloe and kick her out of your house,” his glare softens, “Let’s call a truce.”
My heart races as I try to process what just came out of his mouth.
Kick Chloe out?
There’s no way that is ever going to happen. Absolutely not!
“Never,” I grit out from between clenched teeth, “You hear me? That’s never going to happen.”
Tim retrieves his phone from his pocket and holds it out to show me what’s on the screen first. What I see on his phone makes me gasp.
It's a shot of me and Chloe making out in the hallway.
The picture is a bit blurry, and you can tell whoever took this picture was at a distance, but it’s very clear it’s Chloe and me.
I stare at it in horror and look up to see Tim watching me somberly. “Company’s rules first. Imagine what HR is going to say when they see this.”
I do know what HR is going to say. They’re going to say that we violated the company’s code of conduct. As the owner of this company, I’ll get nothing more than a few disappointing headshakes. On the other hand, Chloe will be fired on the spot.
