He eased around the edge of the doorjamb and ducked back fast as a bullet whizzed by him.

“Fucking stay back!” the male ordered.

“Let me go, you bastard!”

“Listen to my mate,” Romeo said. “Let her go, and I’ll let you walk out of the building.”

“Bullshit.”

Romeo closed his eyes and listened. He could hear Ashley’s heavy breathing and her struggles as she was moved around the room.

It was tempting to shift, but he didn’t want to tie himself to his cat when he might need to drive his truck for a fast getaway.

Opening his eyes, he drew on his cat to enhance his strength and speed. He rose onto the balls of his feet and flexed his hands, which were now tipped with deadly claws.

Inhaling deeply, he dove into the room and rolled to the side as bullets went off and the floor splintered behind him. Ashley cried out.

Romeo darted to them, punching the male in the face and disarming him. Ashley dropped to the floor as the male staggered back. Romeo swung the butt of the gun down, catching him in the side of the head. He groaned and fell back, his eyes closing as he hit the floor.

“Romeo!” Ashley rose shakily to her feet. She had fresh wounds on her face and neck, blood trickling from lacerations she’d clearly sustained in her struggle.

“You got free!” He held her with his free arm, drawing her close.

“I was going to save you, but you saved me first.”

He grinned.

“We need to help the others,” she said. “I’ve got claws now.”

She wiggled her fingers at him and she did indeed have dark claws extending from her elongated fingers. She also had fangs, which she bared when she looked at the unconscious male on the floor.

“That’s Buck, Brent’s number two.”

“He’s not going anywhere, but let’s tie him up just to be safe. He’ll be needed for questioning.”

She secured his wrists with a rope, which she tied to a chair to keep him from getting away easily if he did wake up.

“Ready, sweetheart? Stay with me, don’t get hurt.”

“You stay withme, andyoudon’t get hurt.”

She brandished her claws, winked at him, and raced out of the room.

Part of him was horrified that she was running into danger, but that part was overshadowed by the rest of him that wanted to watch her in action. He followed on her heels, slashing and punching his way through the humans, disarming them and helping the ambush.

Ashley was by his side, howling a war cry every time someone came at her.

He was simultaneously proud and turned on, his tiger thrilled she was so fierce and unafraid.

He saw something out of the corner of his eye and turned, barely missing a board swung at his head. Ashley shouted in alarm and Romeo’s entire world went quiet as he watched Buck put a gun to her head and drag her backward toward an open door.

ChapterTwenty-One

No! This was not happening again!

She raked her claws down Buck’s arm that was banded across her chest, but it didn’t stop him from pulling her with him no matter how she struggled. How the hell had he woken up and gotten free from the chair so fast?

The gun barrel was cool against her temple, but that’s not what she was worried about.
