Her gaze shot up—but then his phone buzzed with the sound it made when someone entered his driveway. He was still frowning when he picked up his cell. “Did you message your friends last night?”

She cringed. “I texted Henry. Why? He’s not—”

“They’re both here.” He set the cereal and milk onto the table before bending down and kissing her head. “Eat. I’ll let them in.”

She adjusted her pump before pouring herself some cereal and topping it with milk, then she moved into the living room. She’d just sat down on the couch when Henry and Brigid came barreling into the house. Henry lowered in front of her while Brigid sat beside her, arm around her shoulders.

“Are you okay?” Brigid asked.

Henry leaned forward. “Tell us you’re okay, Han!”

“I’m okay.” She moved her spoon around her bowl. “The guy who was guarding me, however…not so okay.”

Brigid squeezed her arm. “Oh, God. I’m so sorry.”

“Do they think it’s the same person who attacked you at the house?” Henry asked, brows tugged together.

She swallowed. She usually told her friends everything, and so much of her wanted to tell them exactly what had been goingon, but that meant revealing her past, and she couldn’t burden them with that kind of secret. It wasn’t fair to them.

“Probably. Erik and the police are looking into it.”

Henry squeezed her thigh. “Well, we’re glad you’re okay.”

Erik took a step into the room. “You guys want anything? Coffee? Omelet?”

Brigid eyed her cereal. “Frosted Flakes, please.”

Hannah grinned. Her cereal addiction often rubbed off onto her friends.

“Coffee would be great, thanks,” Henry said.

Okay, maybe not all her friends.

Erik dipped his head and disappeared into the kitchen.

Brigid gave her another squeeze. “Tell us what happened.”

“The lights switched off in the office. I ran into the kitchen and pushed a chair against the door. While I was in there, the bodyguard was shot in my office, although I didn’t hear a bullet, so the guy must have used a silencer or something. Erik saw the back of the killer as he ran away, but he looked for me instead of chasing after the guy.”

God, that sounded even worse out loud, and by the horrified looks on her friends’ faces, they both felt the same.

Hannah swallowed. “I’m okay though. Tell me howyouguys have been. Distract me.”

Henry moved to the armchair near the couch. “I’vegot information that could distract you. I’m thinking of breaking up with Owen.”

Hannah’s brows rose. “Really? Why? I thought you really liked each other?”

“We do, but…”

Hannah cocked her head. “But what?”

“I’m kind of liking someone else.”

What the heck? Since when did Henry evenlookat another man when he was already dating someone?

“Well, are you gonna tell us who?” Brigid demanded.

Erik returned, handing a bowl of cereal to Brigid and a coffee to Henry. He leaned down and kissed her head. “Eat, Angel. I’m going to disappear into the office. Call if you need anything.”
