She watched him leave, her heart thumping with each of his steps.

“See!That’swhat I want.” Her gaze flicked back to Henry at his words. “I want to be so utterly obsessed with someone that I can’t focus on anything else when they’re around.”

Well, that was definitely her.

“Tell us who the guy is already,” Brigid pushed, spooning Frosted Flakes into her mouth.

He shook his head. “Nope. Can’t do that. I need to decide if I want to end things with Owen first and pursue this.”

Hannah gave him a small smile. “Whatever you decide, I hope it makes you happy. You deserve all the love, Henry.”

She meant it. These two had been her best friends since the day she’d arrived in Redwood, and Henry had been her first protector here.

He winked at her. “Thanks, Han.”

She switched her attention to Brigid, her gaze running over her face. Any remnants of the bruise had faded. This was the first time she was seeing her friend since that day. She opened her mouth, but Brigid read her mind and spoke first.

“It’s over.”

Hannah frowned, and Henry looked just as confused.

Brigid swirled her cereal around the bowl. “I did something dumb. Got close to a guy I shouldn’t have. But it’s over.”

Anger pulsed through Hannah’s veins. Sheknewthe bruise had looked like the result of someone hitting her, but having it confirmed felt worse.

Brigid lifted a shoulder. “I’ve just been a bit of a mess since everything happened with James. But I’m trying to get better.”

Henry’s voice softened. “We all make mistakes when our heart hurts.”

Tears gathered in Brigid’s eyes, but she blinked them away. “My hearthasbeen hurting. Which is stupid, right? When a man hurts youandthe people you care about, that love should die immediately.”

Hannah shook her head. “It doesn’t work like that. Our heart doesn’t listen to our head.” She wrapped an arm around her best friend’s shoulders. “You’ll be okay. Because we’re going to make sure of it.”

Brigid leaned her head against Hannah’s. “We came to look after you, not the other way around.”

“We look after each other.”

“Fuck. I’m sorry, Hunter.”

Erik ran his fingers through his hair, phone pressed to his ear, Rachel on the other end. “She’s okay. But I can’t leave her until we get this mess sorted out.”

Where she went, hewent. There was no fucking way around it.

Rachel sighed. “I understand. Send me the details of your guy, the one you want detained.”

“Will do.”

“Guess I’ll get to have all the fun myself.”

“I’m sure that won’t be a problem for you.”

She laughed. “Weapon, remember? Slaying the bad guys is what I do.”

Erik’s lips twitched. How the woman almost got a smile out of him at a time like this, he had no fucking clue.

“Areyoudoing okay?”

Her question caught him off guard, and his frown returned. “No. Nothing in this world scares me except the possibility of losing her. And last night, I came too fucking close.”
