“Later,” Johnny said.
Fucking, fucking fuck!I didn’t want to be a father with that ditz. There was no way. This couldn’t be happening to me. Jackie wasn’t going to take this well at all.
I’d spent nearly the entire day thinking about Sophia. I had to talk to her. I needed to hear it from her mouth. Shit wasn’t adding up, and I knew there was no way the baby she was having was mine. No fucking way.
When I got off of work, I made the phone call I had been dreading all day.
“Hunter?” Sophia asked.
“Yeah. How have you been?” I asked.
“I’m doing great. How about you?”
“I’ve been better.”
“I’m sorry to hear that. What’s going on?” she asked. How could she ask me that shit knowing full well she had just told a friend and co-worker she was pregnant with my baby?
“Why don’t we stop with the small talk and cut to the chase. Johnny told me he ran into you this past weekend. Is there something you want to tell me? Or something you should have told me five months ago, maybe?”
“Oh, that. Yeah. Congratulations! You’re going to be a father,” she said.
“I don’t think so,sweetheart.” My term of endearment was anything but that. My blood was boiling, and I knew every bit of it had rushed to my face.
“Like it or not, I’m pregnant with your baby.Sweetheart.You may as well get ready to take on this responsibility.”
“That’s not my baby, and you know it.”
“Are you accusing me of cheating? I never cheated on you!”
“I always wore a condom the entire year we were together. Let me repeat myself: there’s no fucking way that’s my baby.” My fist clenched tighter. It felt like my fingernails were beginning to dig into my palm.
“Maybe one broke, or slipped off somehow.”
“I always knew you weren’t the brightest bulb in the box. Don’t you think if something like that happened I’d have known about it?”
“Whatever, Hunter.” She huffed into the phone. “I’ll give you a call when I go into labor, then you can come to the hospital and sign the birth certificate.”
“Really? You think I’m that stupid? Before I sign anything, a DNA test will be done because I’m not taking financial responsibility for someone else’s kid. Period.” I inhaled deep, then began talking just as she tried to babble some more idiotic comments. “Tell your doctor you need that DNA test as soon as the baby is born. I’ll gladly be there for that to prove there’s no way that baby is mine.”
“I fucking hate you, Hunter!” she screamed, then hung up the phone.
Chapter 22
Hunter
My heart sank when I saw Jackie’s name display on my phone. Despite my gut feeling on this kid situation, I knew there was a slight possibility it could be mine, until the DNA test proved otherwise. And I needed to tell Jackie instead of keeping it a secret.
“Hi, Chipmunk,” I said.
“Hi, baby. Are you going to come over, or do you want me to come to your place?”
“Hmm,” I muttered. What a question. If I went to her place and told her about this bombshell, there was a possibility she’d throw me out. That would crush me. If she came to my place and I told her, she could storm out, be super upset, and have to drive home. No, I couldn’t take the risk of her driving after hearing something like this.
“I’ll come over to your place,” I said.
“Is everything all right? You don’t sound like yourself.”
“I’m fine. I just have a lot on my mind right now. We’ll talk about it when I get there.”
