“Do your parents live there too?” she asked. I set my fork down and held my hands flat on the table.
“No. Unfortunately, they both died in a car accident a few years ago.” Hunter reached over and stroked my hand.
“I’m so sorry to hear.”
Chapter 21
Jackie
The visit with Hunter’s parents was much more delightful than I’d expected. The entire drive there I kept thinking we’d leave early for one reason or another. When his father came home, his mom seemed to calm down. Way down.
The first day his dad asked me a lot of questions about my family. He told me he was very fascinated by genetics and liked to know about family lineage. I never thought about my family history beyond my grandparents, but our conversation piqued my curiosity.
Our first night in the house, sleeping in Hunter’s bedroom, felt like a childhood sleepover. Hunter wanted to make love to me in his bed, but I couldn’t let him do that. Instead, he got one of the best blow-jobs I could muster. In exchange for no further advancements until we got back home, I let him finish in my mouth. I swallowed every single drop.
Over the four days together, we had a good time playing cards, playing badminton in the back yard, barbequing, and just sitting around talking. His mom and dad were really cool people.
The drive back Monday night seemed much shorter than it actually was. Hunter played a lot of music to see if he could find another song I liked. The time flew, and before we knew it, we were home. And I had another country song I could say was pretty freaking awesome. I had asked him to playHighway Don’t Careseveral times. He told meShe’s Everythingby Brad Paisley was our song, in his opinion.
I walked in to work Tuesday morning to find two stacks of files sitting on my desk to refile. I stood and flipped through the pages of one of the files on top. After putting my things away, I walked to the coffee shop in the building and got the largest cup of coffee possible before returning to my desk.
My mind was on Hunter the entire time I worked. I couldn’t believe we had come so far from where we were a couple of months back. We felt perfect together.
Hunter
On certain days, I’d be lying if I said I loved my job, and today was one of those days. I loved the money, and that was what would get me through this first day back from my time off. I worked with some great guys, but working outside in the hot Florida sun sucked balls. It was way too hot for any reasonable human being to deal with. I never understood how some of the guys who had been with the company for decades were still working in the same construction jobs. It must be the pay. It had to be the pay.
“Hey man, guess who I saw this weekend?” Johnny, a friend and one of my co-workers, asked.
“No idea. Who?” I replied.
“Sophia.”
“You know we’ve been over for months, right?”
“Yeah, I know that. But from the looks of it, you’ll be tied to her forever,” Johnny said.
“What the hell are you talking about? The day we called it quits was the last time I saw her. And hopefully it will stay that way.”
“So, you don’t know?”
“Know what?” I asked.
Johnny ran his fingers through his hair. “She’s pregnant. She’s huge. She told me she’s six months, and that it’s yours.”
“No fucking way. If it was, she would have said something to me before now.”
“A normal person would think that. Hey, all I know is what she told me. According to her, youarethe father.”
“Fuck!”
“You always said you wanted kids.” Johnny laughed.
“This shit isn’t funny, man. Fuck my life! What am I going to tell Jackie?”
“Tell her the truth. It happened before you began dating her. She can’t hold it against you, since you just found out. It’s not like you lied or conveniently forgot you knocked up the ex.”
“Thanks for giving me the heads-up. I need to think this shit through. Fucking hell, man. I’ll talk to you later.” I turned to walk away.
