The door opened and Beany appeared. She rushed towards me and knelt down, wrapping her arms around me.

“Hey? I heard you crying through the walls and thought I’d come see if you were all right. Oh gosh, hey, it’s all right. What’s wrong? What’s going on? It’s okay, I’m here, I’ve got you.”

She held me tight as I rocked back and forth, unable to speak. Kissing my forehead, she held on to me as though I was her child. I opened my eyes and looked at her worried face before closing them again tightly, lost in my grief.

We sat like that for what seemed like hours, her holding on to me, and me rocking back and forth, crying until I could cry no more. I eventually calmed down enough that I could speak.

“Tell me what’s wrong,” Beany murmured, quietly.

Without thinking, I blurted out, “Adam is alive.”

She looked at me in shock.

Oh no, I can’t believe I told her. Shit!Panicked, I pleaded with her, “You can’t tell anyone, Beany. Please, please, no one is supposed to know about this.”

“Of course I won’t tell anyone, Amber. Don’t you worry. I’m harboring so many secrets, you have no idea. This one is safe with me,” She joked.

I breathed a sigh of relief. I had no reason to doubt her. She wasn’t a gossipy type of girl.

“But seriously…how is this possible?”

“I don’t know. I just know he’s alive.”

Her eyes widened and she bit her bottom lip. “Holy shit.”

I began to cry again at the loss of the wonderful thing I’d had with Christos. I assumed that the whole thing was a ploy and that he didn’t really love me. I felt used and stupid and angry and I just wanted to hit him over the head for doing this to me.

“Shh, come on. You’re okay. Calm down.”

“I just feel so stupid and lost and I don’t know what to do.”

“Does Christos know about this?”

I shook my head. “No. I found out from the FBI contact I had back when it happened,” I lied, biting my bottom lip, and hoping that she bought my story.

“Maybe you should go and see him. He would know what to do.”

“What am I supposed to do about Adam? I love Christos now. We’ve gotten so close to each other in the last few weeks. I feel like I can’t live without him.”

“Then go to him. Go tell him how you feel. I’m sure he’s dying to hear those words coming from you. Especially if you say you love him now. I wonder why they pretended Adam was dead though?”

“The FBI were suspicious of the recent spate of deaths that were all linked to that secret society, The Order.”

Beany nodded. “I’ve heard about them. Never been asked to join though.”

“They go for the most elite, wealthy students on campus.”

She snorted. “That’ll be why they’ve never asked me to join then. I haven’t got two cents to rub together. Not that I’m bothered. I think secret societies are stupid things anyway. Stupid clubs for idiots to get together and do stupid things.”

“That’s a lot of stupid,” I chuckled wryly.

“Yeah. It is. So, the FBI thinks that The Order is involved with the deaths?”

“Yeah. They seem to think that Professor Owens is heavily involved.”

“I see. I heard he’s really popular around the campus. It seems odd that he would be involved in something like that.”

“I don’t know. The FBI seem pretty sure.”
