Especially when I remembered what she’d done to my Zo-Fee.

My mate walked calmly by my side, her head held high. Pride welled in my chest. It was no easy thing to face the one who’d wronged you. She’d been a wonder.

Wrin met my eyes, and I tipped my chin.

The Tula had let us keep our comps, and I’d had Kirel send several encrypted updates to get the captain up to speed.

“Senator Bila, it is an honor.”

“The infamous Captain Wrin.” Amusement laced her tone. “It is I who should be honored.”

“Oh, am I infamous?” The captain offered her a rakish grin, so unlike his usual countenance that Zo-Fee jolted beside me.

I suppressed my own smile. Wrin had grown up the son of one of Zaar’s premiere politicians. If anyone could handle this viper, it was him.

“I’d like to send my people back to my ship. They need medical care, and you’ll have me as collateral while we finalize our deal.” His charming smile didn’t slip, even though his use of “collateral” was simply a nicer way of saying “hostage.”

A consummate politician, the senator simply stared, letting her silence speak for her.

Wrin pulled out his comp and tapped at the screen. “And of course, I have something else for you.”

Two Zaarn wheeled one of the Grug drones out on an upright dolly.

Senator Bila’s inner eyelids flickered open and shut, and she snapped her jaws together with a clack of teeth. “Is that—”

“A new type of Grug made specifically for fighting?” Captain Wrin said. “Yes, we believe it is.”

“Your people may go.” She shooed us away as if we were irritants, but she couldn’t help getting in one last dig. “Goodbye, my pet.”

My mate stood straighter. “It’s Sofia Perez. You might as well remember it. I’m the person who figured out how to save your ass.” And with that, she marched into theArrow’s airlock.

A proud grin split my face as I followed.

Frek, I love this female!

CHAPTERFOURTY-ONE

Sofie

A single Zaarn waited for us inside the shuttle, as tall and fit as any of them. He offered me a pleasant smile that immediately put me at ease. “I’m Sron, the head medic.”

“I’m Sofie.”

Tark said, “No matter what he says, Raxnor needs to be looked at first.”

Raxnor scowled at him. “No, Sul is limping.”

“It’s nothing!” The big male pulled a chair from the wall and plonked onto it. “I’ve had worse from bar fights.”

“Trust me, he has,” Kirel quipped as edged around us, headed for the cockpit.

Raxnor turned to me.

I raised both hands and shook my head. “I’m fine. You’re the one who needs medical attention.”

He grumbled and growled the whole time, but Sron finally got him to lie down on a bed and submit to treatment.

I settled onto the chair Tark pulled down for me, and Lila immediately jumped into my lap. After pulling off my gloves, I buried my fingers in her black fur and gave her a good scratch. Then we all strapped in for takeoff.
