“I have spent most of my life without my parents, so I know what it feels like not to have a proper family. I’ve been both an older sister and mum to Chrissy. So, I’m hoping I have got the mum thing down to a tee. I want to spend my time between the UK and here in Madeira so you can be part of the twins’ life growing up. I want them to be able to speak Portuguese and understand their Catholic faith. I will help Aliciana as much as I can with her 1odelling career, if that is what she wants. However, not at the cost of hurting you and Eduardo. I will do all of this, with or without Ricardo by my side.”

The tears were pouring down both our faces now as we continued to hug each other. Maria pulled away with a huge smile on her face.

“Mateus told me that you had asked him about our local church and whether you would be able to have the twins christened there. I hoped it was because you wanted them to be part of our lives, but I was also worried you were saying it just to keep him happy. I’m so glad to hear that you want us to be part of the twins’ lives. And no matter what happens, we will always consider you as a daughter in our lives, Abigail. I hope one day we will get to welcome your sister and her fiancé as well.”

“I know she would love to meet you all. They both will.”

With both our minds set to rest, we enjoyed the rest of our afternoon together. I got to spend some time with Aliciana as well and chatted with her about what I could do to help. She understood that it would be a little while before I could put everything in place, what with the upcoming birth of the twins, but I would help her in any way I could. At the end of the day, we were all completely rested and the girls had been pampered all day. They all thanked me and promised they would return the favour once the twins were born. Maria would look after them for the day while at least Sofia and I had a relaxing day. As we said our goodbyes, Sofia pulled me into a hug and whispered into my ear.

“Just remember what I said. Don’t give up on Ricardo. You may have to make the first move, but I know he loves you. Mateus said that was plain to see. Just give him time. It may take longer than you have initially given him, but don’t let him get away. Deep down, he’s a good man, but only you can bring the good out in him.”

With that, they all headed off back to their homes, and I was left alone again.
