I looked at Mateus as the words started to sink in.

Abigail was okay. My Bonita was safe. I started to shake and the tears started to fall from my eyes, not from grief, but relief. She was going to be okay. My Bonita would be at home with me this evening in my bed. I looked outside as Bianca was being led down the steps, blood coming from a wound in her shoulder where she had obviously been incapacitated by the police. I waited to see Abigail come down the steps, but there was no sign of her. The relief I had been feeling started to manifest itself back into a panic until the security guard came over and spoke to us.

“Miss Goddard must have fainted at some point. The police medic is just checking her over. He has said you are welcome to come on board and carry her down to take her to the hospital to get her checked over. From what I understand, you should get checked as well. Mr Bettencourt is in the hospital with side effects from the drugs that Miss Emerson gave you all, so it would be best if you don’t drive again until you are checked.”

“It’s fine,” Mateus said. “I will drive them both, and he can pick up his truck tomorrow. You will just have to let them know it’s still here.”

“If you let me have the keys, we will park it here in the compound. Just let us know when you are coming to get it, and we will meet you out the front.”

I looked at the pair of them and passed my keys over. I was still staring out to the plane as they were speaking, desperate to get to my Bonita. I got up from my seat and was led out to the plane. Walking up the steps, I was greeted by two police officers, who immediately moved out of the way when Mateus showed them his police badge. As I walked into the cabin, I saw the police officer that was checking over Abigail. In a matter of seconds, I was over there and kneeling in front of her. I had never felt as relieved as I did right then. I just needed to see her eyes and know that she was okay.

“Bonita, please wake up. You’re safe now.”

I placed my hand on her face and gently stroked her cheek, trying to coax her from her slumber. I wasn’t sure if it was the shock of everything that had happened or the lasting effect of the drugs that she had taken that had caused her to faint. I just needed to know she was okay.

“I think you should get her to the hospital. We do have an ambulance on its way for Miss Goddard. She seems fine, but I would rather the medics check her out.”

I gave the police officer next to me a nod in acknowledgment and grabbed the blanket that was on the floor next to her. She was still wearing the swimsuit and coverup from the earlier photoshoot, and although it was hot outside, the air conditioning within the plane made it freezing in here. I wrapped the blanket around her and picked her up in my arms. It was the first time in hours that I finally felt relieved. My Bonita was with me and was safe. Now I just needed to make sure that she was okay. I walked out of the plane and down the steps towards Mateus, who was talking to one of the medics next to the waiting ambulance.

“Let’s get her into the ambulance and checked out. Then we can look at you as well.”

There was no reason for the medic to look at me. I was fine. Well, I would have felt better if Abigail was awake and I could see that she was fine. I stepped up into the ambulance and placed Abigail onto the stretcher within it, moving out of the way to let the medics check her over. I didn’t want to leave her, but I knew I had to let the medics do their job. I moved to the door, where Mateus was standing.

“Once they get you on your way, I will follow you up to the hospital. I need to know as much as you do that she is okay.”

I wasn’t sure how to take what he had just said. Was he saying that he cared for her? Possibly loved her? My insecurities were starting to return. For the past few days, things had been amazing between me and Abigail. Could it be that there was a chance that Abigail could leave me like the rest of them?

“Stop second-guessing yourself, Kye. Abigail loves you. Anyone around you can see that. Don’t let your insecurity and the darkness take over your life. You love her, and you finally admitted it to her. Don’t throw everything away because of what you think could happen.”

I knew he was right, but the doubt was still there in the background. I would just have to push it aside for now, at least until we were back in England and we could discuss our future together. It was then I heard one of the sweetest sounds I could ever hear.

“Kye…Where’s Kye? Is he okay? Did he make it to the hospital?”

I didn’t give the medics a chance to answer for me. I was by her side in a matter of moments, holding her hand. She was awake, which meant that she was okay. It was all I had wanted to know.

“Bonita, estou tão feliz que esteja bem.”

I saw the puzzled look on Abigail’s face, and it was only when one of the medics next to me started to chuckle that I realised I had immediately started to speak in Portuguese without thinking.

“I’m sorry, Bonita. I was so relieved to see you awake that I immediately spoke to you in Portuguese. I said I am so happy to see you are okay.”

I took her hand in mine and kissed her knuckles tenderly. Seeing her eyes gazing into mine and the gorgeous smile on her face was all I needed to remove any insecurities I had. This woman was mine and I loved her, and for the moment, I was never going to let her go.

“Kye, you came to find me. I was worried I was never going to see you again. Bianca was going to—”

I cut her off by pressing my lips to hers. We would have time to talk later, but now I just wanted to get her checked at the hospital and then take her home where she belonged.

“Let’s get to the hospital, and we can talk when we get home.”

With that, I sat in the chair next to her as the medic shut the back door and we headed off to the hospital.
