Chapter Five

Kye

Iwas bored. I hated being in the office, that just wasn’t me. I needed to be out in the field, but as one of the senior members of staff, we tended to spend most of the time in the office, consulting with our hired staff and discussing plans for upcoming jobs.

I had to get out of the office. It was okay for the rest of the guys. They all had women to go home to at the end of the day, so they had a reason not to be out in the field. Me? I had nothing. I was just going to head out and find something to do when my office phone rang.

“Kye, can you come to the office, please? I have a job for you and need you to meet someone”

“Sure thing. Be there in a minute, Jayden.”

“Thanks.”

I got up from my chair and walked around my desk, then I headed down the corridor to Jayden’s office, wondering what the hell was so important that he had called me into his office. It had to be a high-profile job, as we didn’t get involved in anything else. I knocked on the door and walked inside his office. Before I could look around to see who the client was, Jayden spoke.

“Thanks for coming in, Kye. I’d like to introduce you to one of Sienna’s friends, Abigail Clarke. Otherwise known as the famous model Lila Goddard.”

Following Jayden’s hand as he introduced me to the client, I looked over and immediately stopped dead in my tracks. It was her. The woman I had been thinking about for the past two weeks. And now that he had introduced me, I knew exactly who she was and where I had seen her before. She had been on the cover of one of the magazines Kelsey had been reading when Nathan was in the hospital.

My eyes were immediately drawn to hers, and if I wasn’t mistaken, she had the same longing look in her eyes that I’d had all day at Jayden’s wedding. She was even more gorgeous up close. One word came to mind, and it shocked me. It wasn’t English. It was Portuguese. Bonita.

She was beautiful, but I couldn’t get ahead of myself. Even with the look in her eyes, she would never want a guy like me. She got up from her seat and held out her hand in a greeting. Taking it, I immediately felt a spark between us. So did Abigail, as her eyes met mine again.

“It’s lovely to meet you, Kye. I’m sorry you are getting dragged into this mess.”

“Nice to meet you too, Miss Clarke. I’m sure if Jayden has asked me in here, it is important enough for me to know.”

“Please call me Abigail.”

“If that’s what you prefer. Why don’t you take a seat, and I can find out why Jayden has called me in here.”

I looked over at Jayden, who had a smirk on his face. If I hadn’t known better, I was sure he had done this on purpose. But a job was a job, and it was one I would take seriously if he wanted me to do it. I took a seat in front of Jayden’s desk, not wanting any close proximity to Abigail. I was already recollecting the thoughts I’d had the other night and was worried being that close to her would have an effect that would be embarrassing to both her and myself. Jayden broke the near-awkward silence as I sat down.

“As I said, thanks for coming in, Kye. I’ll explain briefly what has happened, and then we can put a plan in place to keep Abigail safe.”

I immediately spun my head around to look at Jayden when he said keep Abigail safe. I didn’t care what the job was, I was going to take it. I sat there and listened to Jayden as he explained about the mysterious packages, flowers, chocolates, and notes that had been turning up at Abigail’s photoshoots and the office. I could understand why the police wouldn’t get involved. Without knowing who the person was, there was no reason to be worried. He hadn’t made any threats towards her, so there was nothing they could do. It didn’t make it right, but I could understand why they wouldn’t.

However, upon hearing that he had sent a letter to her home address and also knew her real name, along with her sister’s, that was a completely different situation. I decided there and then what I needed to do. She was going to come and stay with me in my apartment. I would take her to all her photoshoots and shows, and wouldn’t take my eyes off her the entire time. All I had to do was to convince Jayden and Abigail that this was the right course of action.

The room went quiet for a moment, and I sat there contemplating how to make my suggestion.

“I’ll admit, I’m not happy that he has escalated to sending letters to your home address, Abigail. And seeing what he thinks passes for lingerie, I am extremely worried about his mental stability and what he may do to you if he does get close. I think we should get the rest of the senior team to find out as much as they can about anyone that has had contact with you over the past six months. One of them must have some link to whoever is doing this, if it isn’t the perpetrator themselves. I’m also going to make a suggestion, and I really want you to consider it for your own safety.”

I paused for a second and looked from Abigail over to Jayden, who had placed the smirk back on his face. He knew exactly what I was going to say. It was as if he had planned this all along, probably with Sienna. Even if he had, I wasn’t going to change my mind. I needed to keep Bonita safe and alive.

“I don’t want you staying at your apartment, Abigail. In fact, I don’t want you alone at any time. My suggestion is that you come and stay in my apartment with me in Docklands, and I attend every event and photoshoot that you go to. I know it sounds over the top, but I know my apartment and the security measures. I can keep you safe there. It has plenty of bedrooms, so you can choose which one you stay in, and three of them have en-suite bathrooms so you don’t have to worry about sharing.”

I looked over at Jayden, and his smirk had changed to a full-blown smile, which he was trying to conceal from Abigail behind his hand, appearing to be considering my suggestion. I was just a little more observant than Abigail, because I saw it. It just confirmed my feelings, that this was what he had planned all along. I looked back at Abigail; I could tell she was unsure of my suggestion.

“Kye, I do understand your concern. But couldn’t you just come and stay at my apartment?”

“How safe would you feel staying in your apartment?”

I saw the realisation come over her face. Without saying a word, she answered my question. She didn’t feel safe at all. What happened today had tipped her over the edge.

“I guess you’re right. And with your apartment being in Docklands, it would be a lot closer to the agency, so my commute will be a lot shorter. I guess I don’t really have a choice.”

It was Jayden who answered that question for me. “You do have a choice, Abigail. You don’t have to follow Kye’s suggestion. However, for my own peace of mind, I hope you will.”
