Chapter Twenty-One
Abigail
The photoshoot was going extremely well. Joel was an amazing photographer. I could see why he was so popular on the island. He was caring and considerate to his models and explained exactly what he required me to do without once placing his hand on me. I could see Kye was relaxed watching him as he did his job. It made the whole experience a pleasure, which was unusual for a photoshoot. There was always some form of tension in the air, either from myself, the photographer, or Kye himself.
It helped that I seemed to build a rapport with Joel almost immediately. His calming voice put me at ease instantly. His directions were clear and concise, and I never had to question what he wanted me to do, or what position he wanted me to be in. All in all, today was turning into one of my best shoots ever, and I couldn’t wait to see what the pictures look like.
We were just taking a break before going to the next area of the caves, where Joel had decided to go. I was worried about Kye, though. I looked over at him a couple of times and he looked tired. Like he was going to fall asleep at any moment.
“Kye, are you okay? You look tired. Is something wrong?”
My concern for Kye was growing by the second. He looked completely out of sorts and appeared to be struggling to see straight as if he was having difficulty focusing on me. He turned to me and smiled. It was meant to be reassuring, but honestly, it worried me more.
“I’m fine, Bonita. I’ll just have some more water, and I’ll be right as rain. Make sure you stay hydrated, though. I wouldn’t want you dehydrating down here.”
I knew he always worried about me not drinking enough water and keeping myself hydrated. I smiled back at him and turned to talk with Joel. We chatted about what he would like for the next part of the shoot, but the more I spoke with him, I started to notice the same behaviour in him as I had with Kye. I could feel my panic starting to rise, but like Kye, Joel assured me he was fine and that we should head down to the next area to start the shoot there. Just as we were about to leave, I saw Bianca walking into the caves.
“Bianca, why didn’t you tell me you were going to be here today?”
I was quite surprised that she had come here. The last time I had communicated with her, she had wished me well for today and said she would see me next week when I got back to the UK. My concern was starting to grow, especially after my conversation with Mateus yesterday.
Could it be that Bianca was behind everything?
I couldn’t let her see I was worried if it was indeed her. She walked over to me with a brilliant smile on her face.
“I thought I would surprise you, Lila. I have always wanted to come to Madeira and heard how gorgeous these caves were. I just had to see it for myself.”
I could see Joel was starting to struggle to stand up straight, and if I was honest, I could feel my head starting to spin. Pushing through my concerns, I spoke.
“That’s so nice of you, Bianca. Wasn’t that nice, Kye?”
I looked over and saw that Kye was sitting on a rock. It looked as though he was struggling to sit up straight, almost falling several times as he tried to get his phone that was currently ringing. I felt my anxiety start to rise as he started to speak. I assumed it was Mateus that had called him. I saw Bianca smirking from the corner of my eye. I just about managed to hear what Kye was saying, and when I did, my heart almost stopped beating in my chest.
“Too late…already here…drugged…need help—”
Already here? It was then it dawned on me. Mateus had been right: it was Bianca.
I looked over at her and the smirk had morphed into a massive grin. She almost looked pleased with what was happening in front of her. It just confirmed the dreadful feeling I had in the pit of my stomach. I saw Joel collapse onto the ground, and as I turned, I heard and then saw Kye’s phone fall to the floor as he collapsed onto the ground. I screamed out his name and ran over to him picking his phone up to see Mateus’ name on the screen.
I went to speak to him, but the phone was immediately taken from my hand as I looked up to see Bianca standing above me.
“I can’t have you telling anyone it’s me, now, can I?”
I could feel the panic starting to rise in me as the realisation of the situation I was facing hit me. I desperately tried to wake Kye, but he was completely out cold. I couldn’t get any reaction from him.
“I’m sorry, Abigail. I had to make sure that Kye and Joel wouldn’t be awake to save you. But don’t worry, it’s only a mild sedative. They should be awake in a couple of hours. Just enough time for me to get you to the plane and on to our destination.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I had trusted this woman in front of me with my life. She had been my PA for years. Why was she doing this to me?
The anger I was feeling started to build inside of me. There was no way I was going to go anywhere with her. She wouldn’t be able to take me without force, and I was going to put up one hell of a fight to stop her.
“I’m not going anywhere with you, Bianca. You can’t make me.”
She started to laugh at me. At least I think that was what she was doing. I could feel myself starting to get confused. My spinning head from earlier had now turned into dizziness, and I was struggling to focus on everything around me. It was then that it hit me. The water. It had to have been the water. But I knew that Kye always checked the bottles before he handed them to me. He would always make sure that they hadn’t been tampered with.
“I’m afraid I can make you. You will soon be joining your boyfriend there in the land of nod. I must admit I’m surprised that you have gotten that close. It was quite a display you put on at the lava pools the other day. I bet he’s a killer in bed. Perhaps I should tie him up and give him a try before I go. What do you think?”
I was starting to lose it. The anger was building in me. But try as I might, I couldn’t pick myself up off the ground. My body felt so weak, and I could feel myself starting to shake. I couldn’t tell if it was the drugs, the fear, or the anger I was feeling that was doing it. In any case, it was keeping me from getting to Bianca and stopping her stupid plan.
