Chapter Sixteen
Kye
Icouldn’t believe that I had agreed to take Abigail on a bike ride. I could have murdered Mateus when he mentioned my Harley. I didn’t even know why he had brought it over. However, when I saw the excitement on Abigail’s face, I knew I couldn’t say no. That was why she was currently riding on the back of my Harley, her body so close to mine as we headed towards Porta Moniz. She had loved it here when she did a photoshoot the other day and was desperate to come back and spend some quality time here. I knew there was plenty for us to do, and as it was nearing the middle of the afternoon, I thought we could have an early evening meal there.
We arrived at Porta Moniz by around three o’clock, and it was already extremely busy with tourists. It was always the same, and the locals tended to steer clear during the summer months. I was slightly worried that someone might recognise Abigail while we were here, but she had brought a large sunhat and glasses to disguise herself without looking too obvious. Being able to speak fluent Portuguese would help as well. I would be able to ask the staff to find us somewhere quiet to sit, away from the crowds.
I parked up the bike and helped Abigail with her helmet, and she quickly donned her disguise. She was very lucky that both her hair and complexion leant herself well to a Portuguese woman. I didn’t know why, but my hand automatically went out to take hers. I would like to say it was me being protective of her, but I loved the feeling when we were walking along the beach last night. We walked along the front, acting like any normal Portuguese couple. No one was giving us a second glance, and I was thankful for that. A short way in front of us was one of my favourite restaurants, Conchinha Bar. It was more a snack bar than a restaurant, but it would be perfect for Abigail and I. They would find a private corner for us to sit away from the rest of the tourists, but we would still be able to see the sea.
We walked into the restaurant, and I immediately spoke to the owner.
“Boa tarde. Você poderia nos encontrar uma mesa privada lá I, por favor?”
I gestured to Abigail and asked her to remove her glasses for a moment. The owner recognised her as Lila almost immediately and hurriedly got a waiter to set up a table behind one of the dividers outside. I saw the look of confusion on Abigail’s face. I forgot that she didn’t speak Portuguese, so she wouldn’t have understood a word. The waiter guided us to our private table and gave us a menu after we sat down.
“What did you say?”
“I just wished him a good afternoon and asked if he could give us a private table outside. He recognised you when you took off your glasses from the other day when you were modelling, so that was why he got it done quickly. Don’t be surprised if he comes back and asks for your photo and autograph. He loves to show off when famous people have been here. He won’t post it for a few weeks, so you will be safe.”
I watched her relax as I explained everything to her, and she gazed out at the lava pools and the ocean beyond. With the sun shining down on her, she looked even more beautiful than I had ever seen her. I hadn’t realised how long I had been gazing at her when I looked up and saw her watching me smiling.
“Sorry, Bonita. I didn’t mean to stare at you. The sun behind you just made you look amazing and I couldn’t help it.”
As soon as I said the words, I regretted them. I had never said anything like that out loud to Abigail before, and I had never meant to say it. Leaving her hat on, she removed her sunglasses. With her back to the road, most people wouldn’t notice who she was. She smiled at me before she spoke.
“Are you finally going to tell me why you call me Bonita?”
I wondered how long it would be before she asked me that question. I suspected that she already knew what it meant, but just wanted me to be honest and tell her myself. I looked down at the menu, just so I didn’t have to look her directly in the eyes as I answered her question.
“When I saw you at Jayden and Sienna’s wedding, it was the first word that came into my head. I’m guessing that my brother told you what it meant, if you hadn’t already Googled it?”
“He did tell me. I didn’t want to look myself, as I wanted to think you were calling me something endearing every time you said it. I was afraid if I looked it up, it would shatter my illusions.”
I finally gained the courage to look up into her gorgeous eyes. “And did it? Shatter your illusions, that is.”
She moved her hand and placed it over mine. All the feelings I’d had for her from the first time I saw her started to flood back at her touch. All the times I had dreamed about her and what she would do to me. I lifted my hand and hers with it, as I leaned down and kissed it. She was breaking down every barrier again, but for some reason, I couldn’t stop. I felt my heart start to beat faster and warmth came over my body. I wanted to feel this. Ever since she had been in my arms asleep for most of the morning, I hadn’t wanted to let her go.
“No. Him telling me that you’ve been calling me beautiful all this time would never shatter my illusions.”
She lifted my hand with hers and returned the kiss that I had given to her. The waiter chose this moment to come over and take our order, breaking the moment. I was only slightly relieved that we had been interrupted. I really wanted to stay in this moment forever. Just the two of us here, with no worries, no wondering whether a stalker was going to turn up. Just a couple enjoying an evening together. Although that was the problem. The thing that made my heart sad was, we weren’t a couple. We never would be.
We placed our order with the waiter and he went away, leaving us alone again, but the moment was gone. We spent the rest of our time enjoying the sights and sounds of the beach. We sat enjoying our food, chatting about nothing. It was nice just to talk about normal things and not worry about everything that had happened earlier in the day. After finishing our meal, we decided to walk over to the lava pools. Most of the tourists had now left for the day and it was mainly locals that were in the bars.
As we were walking across the rocks surrounding the lava pools, Abigail missed her footing next to me. Quickly, I reached out and pulled her into my arms. As I pulled her to me, I met her eyes. I couldn’t help myself as I looked down at her lips. I was desperate to taste them. I needed to taste them.
Before I could stop, I found myself leaning down and pressing my lips against hers. As she gasped, I took the opportunity to deepen the kiss. I had dreamed about this moment for so long, and when she placed her hands around my back and up to my neck, I was completely gone. When she started to kiss me back, I just wanted to be with her. Mind, body, and soul connected to her. For a moment, I was complete. My soul felt at ease and at home.
I pulled away from the kiss, and as I looked down into her eyes, and saw the look of pure love and lust that was in them. Her lips were swollen and red from our kiss.
At that moment, I realised the mistake I had made. I had let my guard down. I started to feel guilt and regret for what I had done. I should never have let it happen. How could I have been so stupid?
“Kye, what’s wrong? Please don’t shut me out again. Talk to me.”
I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t tell her what was wrong, or how I was feeling. I had taken things too far. I should never have kissed her. My heart was beating fast, and I felt my throat closing, constricting my breathing. I needed to get away from the situation, but that wouldn’t be easy when I had to take her back to my house on the back of my bike.
But I needed to get back. I needed to get my head straight. I hated to admit it, but I needed my brother.
“Nothing, Bonita. We’d better be heading back.”
