“And how did you track me?”
“Thankfully, your best friend knows what’s right for you.”
“Fucking Emma.” She clenched her jaw, frustration pulsing through the veins along her neck. I grabbed her hand, and she yanked it away.
“Let me go, Hunter. No one’s following me except you two fools.”
I removed the handcuffs from my back pocket and locked a loop around her right wrist. Her head flew up. “What are you doing?”
I clicked the other loop around my wrist. “Making sure I don’t lose you again. Scar, take my keys.”
I threw the keys to my Bugatti his way. “There’s a woman at the insurer, Grace’s height and build. Why don’t you give her a ride?”
Grace spun me around. “What are you doing?”
“Getting you out to safety.” I removed my sweatshirt and threaded the garment over our hands to hide the cuffs. “Try to keep up.”
Scar left, and we hurried in the other direction. I ordered an Uber around the corner and two blocks down the street. The Cadillac was waiting by the time we reached the building’s south exit. I slid into the backseat beside Grace.
She lifted her cuffed hand. “Now, can you take it off? As you can see, I’m not going anywhere.”
“The cuffs are staying.”
The driver snuck a peek in the rearview mirror, and I gave him a solid look to keep his eyes on the road.
“I want an update from my brothers today. Including Scar.”
“They’ll come over when there’s an update to give. It’s more important you see your mother. I invited her for dinner tonight.”
“Wonderful, and how do you expect I’ll cook with these on?” She shimmied her hand.
“You wouldn’t have to worry about handcuffs it if you’d stayed home like I told you.”
“If you’d allowed me to go to the clinic, I wouldn’t have needed to sneak out. What is this? Babysitting mistake 101? I’m thirty-seven, for fuck’s sake.”
Grace and her occasionally dirty mouth weren’t anything I hadn’t handled before. I let out a frustrated breath and kept my eyes on the road, checking whether we were being followed. Grace laced her arms around herself, pulling my hand along her boob.
I turned toward her. “How did your appointment go?”
“Awful. My eggs didn’t mature, and I have to start a new cycle of injections.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Are you sorry, Hunter? Because you’ve been standing in my way ever since you came back.”
“I thought I was trying to save your life.”
“Well, everything after that part.”
“You’re frustrated.”
“We’ve established that already. Did you bring my phone? I should follow up on progress at the salon.”
“Construction quotes are coming in today. I’ve scheduled a call in a couple of hours.”
“Great! And I’m assuming you’ll be there?” She yanked on my wrist again, pulling me onto herself. The same sweet scent of her that tortured me at the house hit me here, and I brushed the hair off her neck and nuzzled her ear.
“I’ll be everywhere, Grace. I won’t swim if you don’t and I won’t exercise if you don’t. I will keep a constant watch over you, day and night.”
