“No, not yet.”

“Oh.”

He stepped over to Blair’s desk. “What are you working on?” Jeff tried to sound casual and flirtatious at the same time, hoping she’d realize he wasn’t the jerk he had been when they first met. First impressions were hard to change.

She smiled and every bad thought that he had in his head to keep his inner wolf in check evaporated. Blair flipped over the paper. “You can’t see it until I’m done.”

So she was working on his apartment design. To him that meant the space was something she truly was excited about. He held up a palm. “I’ll wait. I'm looking forward to seeing what you’ve come up with.”

“Good. So how can I help you two? It’s too early for lunch, so…”

While Jeff had planned for Zane to ask her about her father, the needed information was for Jeff’s uncle, so he might as well be the one to ask. “The sheriff—my uncle—wants to check up on your father to see if he might have had any involvement in your accident.”

“I see.”

He tried to read her reaction but failed to tell if she was displeased or merely wishing the whole affair would go away. “We would need his name, though.”

She blew out a breath. “Of course. It’s Chris Czepanik.”

“I take it your mom never took his name then?” Jeff asked.

“No, she did—as did I. But after he killed her, I didn’t want anything to do with the man, so I legally changed my name to my mother’s maiden name.”

“That was smart.”

She nodded. “He’s in the Midvale Prison in case you didn’t know.”

“We figured.” Jeff looked over at Zane. “We’ll let you get back to work.”

“Wait. If I didn’t say it before, thanks for helping me so much.” Blair looked from him to Zane.

“Of course.” Jeff wasn’t about to say that he, as well as Zane, wanted to spend the rest of their lives with her. That conversation would come in time.

“We need to get out of here before I make an ass of myself,”Jeff telepathed to Zane.

Zane nodded. “Text or call me when you’re ready to head home, and I'll come by,” he told Blair.

She smiled, and Jeff hoped she didn't notice the sudden growth on his face.

“I will," she said.

As soon as they stepped outside, the temperature seemed to drop ten degrees. Being around Blair and not touching her was driving Jeff crazy.

When they reached their vehicles, Zane was grinning from ear to ear. “What?” Jeff asked though he wasn't sure he wanted to know what Zane was thinking.

Zane only laughed and shook his head. “You are hooked on her, man."

"Fine. I'll admit it. I am. After all, she is our mate. You can't tell me that you aren't affected too."

Zane shrugged. "If you mean was my wolf going crazy around her, then yes, he was. But don’t worry about me. I have more discipline than you will ever have.”

He could always tell when Zane was lying, and this was one of those times. “Don't you wish. I saw the way your eyes turned golden when she smiled at you.”

“Oh, shit. Do you think she noticed?” Zane asked, his cheer suddenly disappearing.

“Even if she did, I bet she’d chalk it up to the light.”

“We’re going to have to tell her pretty soon,” Zane said.
