Blair couldn't say anything or move—until the wolf approached her. “Stop!” The wolf halted and then sat down on his haunches. This couldn’t be Jeff. He wouldn’t have been this docile. “Okay, if you are Jeff, turn back. You can do that, right?”
The wolf backed up and then transformed into the person he was before. His clothes even looked untouched. How was that possible?
“Blair, say something.”
“Say something? You just pulled off the most amazing trick. What I want to know is how did you do it?”
Jeff sat down. “It’s something I’ve been able to do since I was a kid. I don't have to think about it. I can't remember how old I was when I first changed from human to wolf, but when I saw my brothers do it, I became curious. They explained that I needed to picture being a wolf. It didn't work at first, but when they chased me this one time, I turned into an animal.”
“Wow. Why hasn’t anyone mentioned this before? The world should know about your talent.” Blair still couldn't fathom this wasn't some illusion.
He stared at her. “If people learned of it, we’d be stared at, feared, and possibly incarcerated.”
“I’ll keep your secret, but I need time to think.” Blair stood. “Can you drive me to Avery’s? I’ll stay with her for now.”
Jeff moved toward her and took her hands, but she pulled away. He backed up. “Sorry. You need time. I respect that. Go pack and I’ll drive you over to her place. But let me ask you one question.”
“Yes?”
“We don’t know who ran you off the road. Are you certain that Avery can protect you?”
Now he was being silly. “Are you thinking someone will follow us to Avery’s place?”
He shrugged. “All I’m saying is that Zane and I won’t let anything happen to you, which means we’ll sleep close by—all night outside in the cold if need be.”
Jeff was playing dirty. “Wolves like the cold, right?”
His shoulders sagged. “Yes. I was trying to fool you, which I now see was dumb. Please stay here. Zane and I will go home at night. The place will be alarmed. No one can get you.”
She would feel safer staying there. “Okay, for now.”
“Thank you. Besides, if you went to Avery’s what would you tell her? That we had a fight? If you say yes, you better have a good reason.”
His logic pissed her off. “Fine. I said I'll stay.”
Before he could respond, his cell rang. “From the ring, it’s my uncle.”
“Answer it.”
He lifted the phone. “Uncle Adam?” He put the phone on speaker.
“We have news. Malia is at the office with a lead. I’d like you, Zane, and Blair to stop by.”
Jeff looked over at her. Of course, Blair wanted to get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible. “Sure,” she said.
“Zane still is watching over Avery,” Jeff said.
“I’ll have Noah take over.”
“Okay, we’ll be right over.” Jeff disconnected. “I wonder what Malia could have found out.”
“Maybe Carl remembered something about the latest incident.”
“You might be right. Grab your things.”
Blair rushed into the bedroom, picked up her purse and sweater, and came out. “Do we have time to shower?”
Jeff seemed to swallow a laugh. “While werewolves have an excellent sense of smell, no one will say anything. They’ll understand.”
