He doesn’t say anything. Just grunts and keeps going with his scrutiny of me.
“Is Nick here?” I ask, getting annoyed at whatever this is.
He squints again, examining me. I shift uncomfortably under his gaze.
He smirks when he’s done with his assessment. It might’ve been my imagination, but I think I saw recognition in his eyes. Just a flash before he turns around leaving the door open.
“Oh Nick! There’s a female caller here to see you!” He shouts out.
Well I guess he can speak. That disputes some of the rumors I heard.
There’s more voices calling out from inside.
“Ohh, a girl!”
“Did she not get enough of you last night?”
“Oh, our little Nick-y poo has a lady caller!”
I hear some stuff being thrown around and then Nick hastily appears in front of the door.
“Do you have it?” His eyes wildly look around searching for it.
“Yes, here.” I thrust it at him. “I didn’t know it was lucky or whatever. I just didn’t want to walk home in a wet shirt.”
He scratches the back of his neck. His demeanor instantly calms now that his shirt is back.
“Eh, I just always wear it the first game of the season, since freshman year under my gear.” He smiles lazily as if it’s nothing.
Ugh, he has such a nice smile.
Even when he’s not trying, his smile gives off a sense of sexy confidence that I will never have.
I wish I had half as much confidence as he does on a bad day.
“Ah, I see. Sorry again.” I awkwardly turn to walk away.
I make it down the steps from the porch when Nick catches up to me, keeping up with my hasty stride to get out of there.
“I was serious, I can give you a different one.” He offers, walking backward to face me.
“No thanks. I honestly wasn’t planning on keeping it. I was just messing with you and then Layla told me that Greg told her it was lucky so I felt bad.” I wave it off. “Ok, see you around.”
“Yeah, uh, see ya.” He stutters quietly, watching me run away.
I run the whole way back to my house. That was the most awkward and embarrassing exchange with another human I’ve ever had to date.
I know I’m socially awkward. I get embarrassed way too easily but this is by far the most humiliating day in my life.
It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t with Nick Miller.
I didn’t take your shirt, oh wait no here it is!
At least he’ll never have a reason to talk to me again.
I can forget all about it.
