It’s just a gut feeling.

Tony is the most important person in my life, and I feel like I’m failing him.

He has always been a nerd, but it seems like recently he got even more into his nerdy hobbies than before. I wonder if it’s just because he stopped giving a shit about others judging him or if it’s just his way of escaping something.

Alright,I give in.

Thank you.He beams. You’re the best fucking bro.

I try to cling to my annoyance when I watch him hurry away from the training grounds, but as usual with my twin, I can’t stay pissed for too long. I just shake my head, suddenly feeling amused. When the warriors get up to leave, I cross my arms in front of my body. “Didn’t you forget something?”

They look at me, confused, until I point at the wrapping paper of the protein bars. Realization soon kicks in, and they begrudgingly collect them and put them in the bin. I can see Serenade’s amusement, but she wisely keeps quiet this time. Once the others leave, she joins me.

“No teasing comments this time?” I ask her.

“I didn’t want to test your limits too much.” She chuckles. “Your patience tends to run thin.”

“You’re not scared of my anger,” I point out.

“That’s true, but I don’t need to provoke it,” she says earnestly. “You have it under better control now.”

She is right. I’m trying to control myself better now and not blow up in everyone’s face. Tony is more approachable than I am, and that’s okay, but my pack shouldn’t be terrified of me. Serenade doesn’t say much more, and we both fall into a comfortable silence while returning to the pack house.

On our way back, we meet our current beta and my father’s best friend, Deacon.

“Hey, Henry.” He nods at me. “Serenade. I saw parts of your training. You did very well.”

I don’t show it, but his praise means a lot to me. He wasn’t always eyeing us kindly. Tony and I went through a rebellious phase as teens and were real troublemakers, and Deacon was pissed at us most of the time.

Serenade bids us goodbye and leaves for the showers for female warriors while I continue my walk with Deacon. “I mean it,” he says. “Both you and Anthony picked up your game. You show responsibility and dedication to the pack. Whatever you learned on your mission with Lord Finn the last few months, it paid off. I’ll be looking forward to seeing you as alphas.”

I look at him for a moment. “I know it wasn’t always easy to deal with our shit. Thank you for not giving up on us.”

I don’t quite have it in me to apologize to him, which is why I settle for thanking him, but he understands nonetheless and nods at me with a smile.

“How is Matthew doing?” I ask him, knowing that he kind of adopted him when he had nowhere else to stay.

“Well…” Deacon beams happily. “He is still going to therapy, but he contributes a lot to his pack and works hard as a warrior.”

“I need to give him a call soon.” I smile, happy for my friend that he finally found his own peace.

Once we step into the pack house, Mom approaches us. I hurry to her, almost ripping the basket she’s carrying out of her hands. “Mom,” I exclaim. “You should be careful!”

Mom shows me her kind smile. “Henry,” she says gently. “I’m just pregnant, not sick. And the basket weighs close to nothing.” She rests her hand on her stomach, smiling slightly.

“You had your appointment today, right?” I ask curiously.

She nods, looking at me warmly. She is always kind and collected. Dad’s often been angry with us for stepping out of line and for provoking him, but she kept the balance. She is not our biological mom, as Tony and I found out a few years ago, but she doesn’t know that we know the truth, and Dad isn’t aware either. Neither Tony nor I have the courage to tell them yet. “Do you want to know?” she asks me.

“Goddess, yes!”

You will be very happy, she links me.

“Fuck yes!” I exclaim. Tony and I will get a sister! A tiny sister to dote on.

Because of our long lifespan, it’s not unusual for lycans to have more children as the years pass. Many of them have a whole bunch of kids early on, though, and don’t really want more. Dad and Mom had problems conceiving, though, so it’s a miracle that Mom got pregnant.

“Keep it to yourself for now.” She chuckles, stretching a bit and dabbing my cheek softly.
