“You still have time,” I reassure her while hurrying to the bathroom myself.

“I know. I just like to be on time.”

Another thing we share!

“Same here. I won’t stop you. You can go ahead, and I’ll let myself out,” I say while I hop into the shower.

“No, it’s creepy to always be that stressed,” she tells me while she sits down on the bed. “If you hurry, I’ll wait for you.”

Cute, I think. She is nervous about being too late, though the Council is only a few minutes from here. I make sure to hurry and take a swift shower. Ten minutes later, I’m ready to leave, too. We both make it out of Elodie’s hotel room and down to the lobby. Before our day leads us in different directions, I make sure to grab her and pull her against my chest.

Elodie clasps my shirt, eagerly kissing me. “I expect to see you later today for our meeting,” she says, smiling at me.

I nuzzle our noses together. “I will be on time.”

On my way back to the pack, I’m feeling a bit lighter. Like most werewolves and lycans, I’ve always dreamed about finding my mate one day. I never expected it to happen so fast and soon, and I never expected it to be someone I already knew and liked. This makes it so much better for me. I know many like the unexpected surprise of something new, the thrill of the unknown, but I was into Elodie way before we found out we were mates. And I’m so happy it’s her.

I don’t give a shit about the thrill of the unknown. I prefer the safety and the warmth of what I already know.

Once I reach the pack house, I feel torn between going to see Tony and talking to him and seeing Mom and Dad first. It happens that I don’t need to make a decision because I can hear my parents’ voices from my dad’s office and knock to step inside.

Dad looks a bit disheveled. He’s probably worried for his two insufferable sons while Mom has her arms crossed in front of her body.

I blink. “Good morning, I guess?”

“Tony came home, fortunately,” Dad tells me without further ado before linking me.I told her what happened.

“So, you know now?” I ask my mother carefully. Her gaze softens when she looks at me before she tosses a glare at Dad.

“This is what happens when you two thick-headed, stubborn alphas deal with things yourself. I’m pregnant, not invalid! And I’m also not toodelicateto be there for my son and talk to him if he has a problem!”

Did you use the word delicate when you told her the reason as to why you didn’t tell her?I link my father.

Yup. I’m seeing my error now.

“It’s my fault,” I tell her. “I didn’t know how to handle it and just went to Dad. I should have talked to Tony first and then to the both of you.”

Mom lets her arms hang down. “I didn’t even notice that he was that troubled,” she mutters.

“None of us did,” Dad points out.

She sighs. “I will talk to him later.” When Dad and I exchange a terrified gaze, she smiles slightly. “Believe me, I’ll be more subtle than you were.”

I nod, feeling relieved that she is stepping in now. No matter the truth behind how Tony and I were conceived, she is our mother and always will be.

“Say…” I feel a bit flustered. “I thought I could invite Elodie over for the weekend and then introduce her to—”

“Oh, freaking yes!” Dad blurts out. “What are you waiting for!? Link her and invite her. She is welcome any day and time.”

Mom chuckles softly at how over-excited he is but nods her agreement.

“It’s just…” I look at my father in particular now. “I haven’t marked her yet. She asked me to wait until she knows how to handle her future. I… just accept it, please, without asking questions.”

“Why are you looking at me in particular?” Dad splutters. “Your mother is here too.”

Mom just smiles gently and pats his arm. “We all know that in this family, only Tony and I can read the room.”

“There is no denying that,” I agree. Tony has saved my ass more than once. In middle school, I was quite popular, as any alpha’s child was, and I got quite a few declarations of love. Tony was the one who taught me how to let down a girl gently.
