Oh shit,I mutter.
“Dalila,” I say quietly. “You know how much I respect you—”
“But you don’t want me to come with you?” she concludes instantly. “I thought, as your luna, I need to have the pack in mind, always.”
“The luna is the heart of the pack. Losing their luna is devastating for a pack,” I explain to her. “And while I think you are absolutely fabulous, you have had no training yet.”
“He isn’t wrong, child,” Auset comes to my aid. “There are lunas who are eager to fight and who are made to fight, like my Cassiopeia, but there are others whose strength lies elsewhere.”
“Like Mom,” I explain to her. “Of course, she can defend herself, but she is not a fighter. My father, however, is, but he sucks at everything diplomatic. That’s when she steps in. It’s a balance, always.”
“I understand.” Dalila sighs. “Well, that’s a lie. I don’t understand much yet, but you promise me this is not just because of…” she pauses.Corinne.She links me.
“I promise you, it’s not the reason.”
She sighs. “Alright, if you think I can help better here, then I will accept it.”
“Actually, you can help here,” Auset says. “Cassiopeia told me you are a high-tech girl. Apophis’ cult is located in a modern base. They have top-notch security. It’s going to be hard to break through it.”
Dalila’s eyes gleam at the challenge. “Hard, but not impossible.”
So are we good?I link her nervously.
We are good, she says. You are right, I’m not a fighter, and I don’t know how to defend myself yet.
I’d be happy if you helped us from here, though, just like Auset said. That’s your true superpower!
Got it.She smirks.
Henry opens his mouth and turns to Elodie. Before he can say anything, though, she narrows her brows. “Don’t even think about it. Elise and I are coming.”
“Absolutely,” Elise agrees. “Besides, you might need our gift.”
When Henry tosses a glance towards Marcel, the latter just grins. “Don’t look at me. I know better than to underestimate my co-gamma. I have full faith in her abilities.”
“I have full faith in Elodie’s abilities, too,” Henry says instantly.
“Fantastic,” Elodie says dryly. “Then that’s the end of discussion.”
I can see Henry’s and Elodie’s eyes glossing over, his fingers twitching slightly the longer the discussion goes. He keeps rearranging the hem of his shirt until Elodie grabs his hand and stares at him. “Alright,” he gives in.
“Is there anyone that can give us information about the base?” I ask Auset.
Auset tilts her head. “No, unfortunately.”
“I could hack into their security cameras, in case they have any,” Dalila offers. “But if their security equipment is good, then they for sure have some. Just get me my equipment, and I can do it.”
“She can stay here with me,” Auset offers. “While you prepare for battle. I can help her detect dangers she might not understand yet.”
“Thank you so much for your offer,” I say, amazed. There is a glint in Auset’s eyes, though, something I don’t quite understand. I decide it’s probably due to the fact that she can get back at her attackers.
Henry and I return straight back home to have Dalila’s equipment brought over and to talk to Dad. Dad sets up an emergency meeting instantly, inviting his beta, Deacon, but also invites Serenade to it.
“Why does trouble always find you?” Dad says once we have told him everything. “All the packs in the world, and you are the ones having to face a deity.”
“We are not facing a deity,” Henry reasons. “The deities are facing a deity. We are just up against a cult.”
“Oh, just a cult.” Dad furrows his brows. “A cult full of witches and shifters who use dark magic.”
