“We are prepared for battle, Dad,” Henry reassures him.
Dad looks at us thoughtfully. “You aren’t prepared for this type of battle,” he mutters. “No one is. You can bet they have some tricks up their sleeves.”
“So do we,” I say. “And like you said, no one will ever be prepared for that battle. Yet we have to take it.”
“Don’t you think it’s a sign of the Goddess that she sent Dalila to Tony?” Henry says. “That she and Bastet led us up to this point. Maahes is freed, and I’m sure he and Bastet will go against their archenemy. But we are here now, and we have a group of ruthless cultists who aren’t going to stop just because their deity abandoned them.”
“We are not being reckless, Dad,” I tell him. “This is something we have to do.”
“I know,” he groans. “Doesn’t mean I like it.”
“So, what do you have?” Serenade intervenes. Deacon is sitting next to her and coaching her a bit. She has been following him around more and more to learn beta tasks from him. “And just so you know, I can’t believe you kept this from me!”
“We had to keep this from everyone,” Henry tells her.
She furrows her brows. “As your future beta, I expect more from my alphas.”
Deacon nods. “The same goes for me. I can’t believe I didn’t know!”
“Okay, you know what, you can be pissed later,” Dad tells them. “For now, we have a cult to tackle.”
I grin a bit at his words. I can’t believe he’d rather fight this Apophis cult than face his beta. No surprise Henry has problems with facing conflicts. Dad’s even worse.
“Let’s begin.” Henry switches on the huge screen of the meeting room. On one of the days when Dalila was alone with Mom, she modernized our equipment and installed a few nice features.
“Computer,” I tell the monitor. “Call Dalila.”
“Call Dalila,” the monotone robot voice answers. “Done.”
Dad looks at me with a frown. “It’s about time I retire,” he mutters.
“This is great.” Serenade beams. “Will the future luna pimp up all our equipment?”
I nod. “We still have to discuss the budget, but that’s the plan.”
“She is so cool!”
“I heard that.” Dalila’s voice appears, and soon, I can see her face pop up in the left corner of the screen. She grins. “And I approve.”
“Do you have something?” Henry asks her.
She nods. “Auset was able to show me the exact location, which made it so much easier.” I can see slight movement behind Dalila, and Auset’s face is suddenly next to her.
“This is so interesting,” she mutters. “What happens if I press that button?”
“Please don’t,” Dalila says, slight panic in her voice.
“Alright, alright.” Auset chuckles.
“So, where was I? I found the exact location.” She shares her screen with us, showing us a map. “There are only little farms around and this building here,” she says, circling it. “It looks like a ruin from the outside, but I took a closer look at it as it’s the only one remotely big enough to hold a whole cult.” She pauses. “The infrared cameras show the following…”
“Where did you get recordings from infrared cameras from?” Henry wants to know.
“Do you really want to know?” she asks innocently.
“Sorry.” Henry shakes his head. “You’re right, it’s better I don’t know.” He turns to me. “Your mate is shady A-F.”
“Yep.” I smirk. “Hot, huh?”
