Alpha Elden looks at her, his brows furrowed. “Flora,” he says as he pulls her into his arms. “Are you sure you want to go on your own?”
She nods. “I have to.”
“I thought you needed to stay out of this,” he urges.
“Things changed,” she explains. “Very unexpectedly so. I’m not joining to fight,” she says. “I’m here to take Dalila to the place.”
“Me?”
She turns to look at me, a smile curling her lips. “Dalila.” She smiles at me brightly. “I think it’s time to go. Your connection to Maahes is still new, so you don’t know yet how to communicate, which is why I’ll be going with you.”
I’m shocked at her words, to say the least. It’s been less than an hour since Auset made me meet Maahes. How does she know already?
“Maahes?” Elden looks at me, his earnest expression changing to a more… curious one. “So you decided to accept your birthright?”
“You knew, too?” I ask, shocked.
“I put two and two together,” he says. “You are Nephthys daughter, and Maahes had a deal with Auset because you weren’t available as long as you didn’t know about your heritage and the supernatural world.”
Flora furrows her brows and hammers her fist against his chest. “You knew all along?”
“Of course.” He smirks, catching her fist and kissing it.
“Why didn’t you say something!?”
“You were hellbent on keeping it a secret,” he says. “So, I thought I was faring better with doing things your way.”
She pouts. “This man,” she says, poking his chest with her index finger. “I swear, you alpha men make me question my life choices sometimes.”
Elden remains completely unfazed and just wraps her in his arms. “Just be careful out there,” he says. “You are up against a deity, and Dalila is new to this.” He looks at me. “When and how exactly did you decide to accept Maahes’ offer?”
“When the group dispersed. He was already on the surface,” I explain. “And… I wanted to talk to him, anyway. Actually, I had made up my mind before that after talking to Cassiopeia.” I pause. “I’m still not sure if it was the right decision, but something inside me urged me to accept him.”
“That’d be Nephthys,” Flora explains. “It was always your destiny to be bound to Maahes instead of being bound to a cat spirit. It’s just that Nephthys, because she is your mother in a way, wanted you to have a choice.” She smiles. “He has been calling out to you recently.”
“What do you mean?” I ask.
“The stars that were changing and unleashing,” she explains. “I’m sure Tony told you about it?” When I nod, she continues. “They were right. Most of them were a sign from Bastet, but the star symbolizing Isis… it was always supposed to be for you. Maahes and you are connected, don’t forget that. He is a capable warrior deity; you won’t regret having sealed your fates.” She pauses, letting go of Alpha Elden and taking my hand. “And now, let’s go.”
“Just who are you?” I ask, amazed.
Her lips tug into a smile. “I’m Flora, luna of Silverlake pack and mate to Alpha Elden, and a royal lycan.”
“But this can’t be all.”
“It’s not,” she admits. “But we don’t need to talk about this now. Instead… focus on the voice inside you. He already called out to you. Am I right?”
“Yes, but I don’t know how to answer.”
“You learned how to use the mind link; now use the same way to link the presence of Maahes. He is not really in your mind. It’s just a connection the both of you have, like a bond to your mate, to your family and friends. There is also a bond to Maahes now.”
Her words make me wonder if one day I can communicate to Nephthys that way, but I shake the thought off for now. I decide to first focus on my bond to Tony, as I feel it the strongest. It’s clear and strong, and I know it will get stronger and stronger every day with our growing love and connection. To my surprise, I feel another bond, too. It’s different and not that intense… it’s Henry. Maybe because they are twins, he became like a brother to me. I don’t have many other bonds. Sadly, I was alone for many years, but there is one other. “I think I found it…” I mutter.
“Focus on it,” she tells me. “Imagine him. You have seen him, have a face to him, try to form his presence in your mind. And then talk to him.”
I nod, trying it instantly.Maahes?Nothing, only silence is greeting me. I go with Flora’s advice and recall his presence when he moved out of Auset’s mind and showed himself to me, a man with a serious yet kind face accompanied by a lion.
Dalila, daughter of Nephthys.
