Maahes!I gasp.

You learn fast,he says.

I think my mate and his friends need help,I point out.

That’s what I was trying to tell you before.I can see his presence getting stronger, his face becoming clearer to me. Wow, is this how it is for Tony and Lys? He seems to be amused by my comparison.Similar, but not quite the same. We have sealed our fate to each other, and as such, you may call on me for help when needed and borrow my powers, but I won’t be here all the time.

Well, I certainly prefer it that way,I mutter.I don’t need you peeking over my shoulder every single moment of my life.Especially when I’m with Anthony…and doing things with him!

Again, Maahes seems to be amused. You are different than I expected.

Are you disappointed?

Not at all.He smiles. My great-aunt Nephthys is a quiet and nurturing person, and Auset resembled her, but you… you are fun to be around.

I decide to take it as a compliment for now.Can you take me to Anthony?

Yes, but I need you to allow me to fulfill your part of the contract,he says.As I have my nemesis waiting for me there.

I nod.Of course.

Then grab the hand of the Child of Light and come with me.

The Child of Light has to be Flora. Where the heck did she get that name from? I eye her curiously but decide not to overthink anything anymore. The moment I grab her hand, I can feel Maahes’ presence manifesting further in my mind, lending me his strength. Instinctively, I think of the place Tony is supposed to be, allowing Maahes’ gift to work on its own.

Flora and I drop onto the floor of the stony field the cult is built on.

“Good.” Flora stands up. “This was incredible, Dalila, and further proof that you were always destined for this.”

“Truth be told, I have no idea what I’m doing,” I admit.

She takes my hand, looking at me gently. “Listen, Dalila, I will try to teach you as well as I can. Though our fates are not the same, I don’t have a contract with a deity. It’s not like that for me.”

“What is it then?” I whisper.

“They don’t like it when we share what we know, and I’m bound by a vow,” she explains to me. “There are reasons for that, and it’s not just to protect them. It’s also to protect us and the fates.”

“It means I can only tell Tony as little as possible,” I mutter.

“Exactly, just like I can’t share everything with Elden.” She pauses. “But our mates are our mates for a reason, and Tony will understand. Elden never pressures me. He trusts me, and I’m sure your Tony will support and trust you, too.”

I nod, feeling a bit lighter at her words. I need to trust Tony to respect my decisions and to understand these new boundaries.

I don’t mind too much,Maahes tells me.I’m not a particularly strong deity. You can share some things with your mate as long as you don’t overshare.

That’s still awfully vague,I mutter.

He laughs.I really like your attitude and your lack of fear.

Well, at least my pet deity finds me hilarious.

*HENRY*

I was expecting to look into the eyes of a man, but to my surprise, all I see is a huge viper sliding towards us. The closer it gets, the bigger it turns.

“Out,” Elodie breathes out, her fingers clinging to mine. “Out of here, Henry.”

She is right. “Run!” I yell.
