“You have no idea…” I mutter.
“Oh, I do.” He chuckles. He turns towards his brother. “Since we are already here, we may as well get out of the water.”
He makes an elegant jump out of the lake, changing mid-air and landing on his feet. He is clad in long loose dark-blue pants and a simple vest over his chest in radiating blue colors. Nen follows him, dressed similarly, but his color scheme seems to be red. He squeals when he takes a step, his arms flailing, until Aenon grabs one of his arms with a chuckle. Nen takes a tentative, wobbly step forward, groaning in annoyance. “It looks so much easier when Freya does it.”
I chuckle before I once again notice the gazes of surprise and wonder around me. At least there is no fear or malice in my friends’ eyes, just curiosity. I can’t say the same for the Blood Snow warriors. They look terrified. Before we can discuss anything further, there are screams to be heard. Finn whips around, pushing me behind him, his body tense and alert.
However, he relaxes immediately. “Right, I forgot…”
“What did you forget?” I peek around him, my mouth dropping open. Ludovica is wielding a huge pan, and behind her is every single slave and omega equipped with more pans and spatulas. Some even have knives in their hands, and Emmanuel carries a gun.
Ludovica gestures at the girls and guys. “Get him,” she yells. “Let’s show our alpha how we deal with rapists and abusers.”
Cheers and screams erupt from the crowd again. They follow Ludovica, running towards Colton and his remaining warriors, who look terrified by the massive group of enraged people who are clearly out for blood.
I notice how none of Finn’s allies and warriors move. His brother Liam has shifted to his human form too, and just watches, curiosity and respect in his eyes. Elden has joined Flora, hugging her close while watching the crowd chase Colton through the pack grounds.
I’m so glad they let Ludovica do this. This is her fight too, and the fight of every single slave.
Aurelia shifts back also, accepting the long shirt her beta offers her, and then walks towards us. She grins. “I repeat, something new every day.”
We all watch in complete awe at how the group of angry slaves chases Colton, who really is running for his life now. They make it past the lake and the pack borders. Colton shifts into his wolf and runs, and while he is easily outrunning them, there is no denying that the slaves, although weak as a single person, are strong as a group. I am filled with pride. These are my people, part of my family, and they are showing so much courage now.
Their yells echo through the area.
“Colton should have let the lady with the pan fight,” Aurelia points out. “She’s got more fighting spirit than some of his top warriors.”
Everyone around us who hears this laughs a little.
“That’s Ludovica,” I tell them. “She is the head of the omegas and slaves, and was always good and kind to us. Like a mother.”
A scream rips through the air, making us all spin around again. For a moment, I think the angry group must have caught up to Colton and is now slaughtering him. But it’s not them. Instead, Colton has misjudged the porous ground. Blood Snow is located between mountains, yet also close to the ocean, so some areas can only be passed through carefully. He has reached a steep slope, not treading carefully enough. Ludovica stops her group at a safe distance while rocks start coming loose, pushing Colton forward further toward the ravine that opens next to him.
He shifts back to his human form, trying to grasp for balance before he stops moving completely as an avalanche descends.
“Ludovica…” he blurts out. “Vica.”
I can’t make out any exact details of what’s happening. They are close enough for us to watch, and although I can’t see their expressions, I can still hear her clearly. “How could you…” she mutters.
Within minutes, it’s over, and Colton is nowhere to be seen.
“Someone should probably go and check,” Nen points out while picking and chewing at his nails.
Aenon smacks his hand, glaring at him. “Stop doing that.”
Nen pouts at him. “It’s just weird because they are dry.”
Before the two of them can continue their quarrel, Arman interrupts them. He shifts back to his human form, looking like he just jumped right off an advertisement—even Aurelia takes a longer look than usual. She exchanges a gaze with another female warrior, who grins slightly.
“I know the area,” Arman says calmly. “I’ll check on him.”
“I can accompany you,” Finn says, his hand brushing over my shoulder. I forget entirely about Arman’s soap-advertisement body and am back to admiring my mate. He can easily compare to Arman, and he is… still all naked! How have I not noticed!? So many prying eyes.
“Yes, accompany him,” I encourage Finn. “And maybe you should shift, you know, to make the journey easier.”
Finn flashes me a grin, his gaze telling me how easily he sees through me. He pecks my lips slightly before shifting to Max. Max, my strong and kind teddy bear, rubs his head against me and pokes me with his snout before heading off to retrieve Colton’s body.
Meanwhile, Ludovica and the gang have returned, whispering among themselves excitedly. All of our allies put on some clothes again, much to Nen’s dismay. “Wolves are a sight to behold,” he whispers to us. “Don’t you think, Aenon? Some are hung like a stallion.”
