I make our warriors stay back and sneak up to the guard furthest to the left. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see Henry and Tony doing the same with the remaining two guards. The man in front of me is one of those who was in the pack house, and shit-talked some of the slaves. This will be fun!
Ready?Elodie asks me.
Yes, do your magic.
For a moment, nothing happens and no sound is to be heard. It’s so quiet that we could hear a pin drop. Then there is the sudden sound of a screeching bird ripping through the silence. The guards look up while the bird twists and wobbles slightly, crashing into a tree. I grin. This has to be one of the girls’ illusions. A man squeals in shock, dropping out of the tree and landing on his back.
“You idiot,” one of the guards hisses. “It’s just a fucking bird!”
That was our sign,Elodie says.
Good, we count down to three.I tense my body, ready to jump. One, two, three!
I jump out of my hideout and onto the man in front of me. He barely has time to register what’s happening. His eyes widen, and he tries to shift, but Max’s claws rip through him before he can do so, freeing his body of his head.
I turn my head, noticing Elise and Elodie sitting on the guard they successfully knocked out of the tree while Henry and Tony swiftly finish the ones in front of them. For a moment, we all keep quiet, but there are no additional noises. Nothing. It seems like they weren’t able to alert anyone or mind link.
Let’s continue. The twins and I lead our group further through the forest, passing through the pack grounds until we reach a vast empty area leading us to the lake. Lots of warriors are stationed there. Now it makes sense why I didn’t see this part of the pack lands during my stay here. It’s probably a training area for them or a place they can hang out. Colton didn’t want me to see too much, it seems.
There is no chance that we can go by unnoticed,Henry says.
I am about to open the mind link to contact the other group leaders and ask for a status update when I hear noises from the other side of the pack. It’s far in the distance, but my ears easily pick up the sounds.
Our group was spotted.Marius’ mind link reaches me and the other leaders.Time for plan B!
Screams and growls fill the air. Max stretches his head towards the moon, his majestic howl filling the night. Soon, more howls can be heard all around the pack area. Time to surround them like a herd of sheep and lead them towards the lake where they think they are at an advantage!
I take off, this time not attacking stealthily. Yet we take the guards in front of us completely by surprise. They have no strategy behind their defense, which makes it even easier to break through them and rush further toward the lake. I can see our other teams pouring in from the other side, not allowing anyone to escape. It’s like a wall of wolves preventing anyone from escaping or getting through.
Every single wolf who has supported Colton in his abuse and rape of the lower ranks needs to be held accountable.
Dad, the pack house?
Don’t worry,he reassures me.Colton and his warriors left in your direction.
“They are not rogues!” one warrior yells.
Wow, that one is particularly smart,Max sneers.
The warriors are shuffling around, one of them trying to lunge at me, but Max finishes him instantly, snapping his neck before he can even land his first blow.
It proved to be a good decision to attack with only a few warriors, as it makes us agile and fast as a group. The twins immediately make their way toward one of the guard towers, where a guard has climbed up with a rifle in his hand.
Anthony growls, his huge lycan climbing the tower and kicking the man down before he can shoot any of us.
I run further into the pack area when I can finally sense him. I’ll never forget Colton’s scent and the air of dread he carries around him. Freya and Elias were right, and he made a run toward the lake. He either thinks he has an advantage there, or he has a hidden path where he can hide away.
“What’s the meaning of this?” he yells while some of his warriors gather around him to protect their alpha. His beta is missing, though. “You’re breaking our laws!”
I halt in my step, and before anyone can do or say anything, I shift back to my human form, staring the man dead in his eyes.
Some of the warriors gape at me. I have to give it to Colton for having a perfect poker face. “So, you survived?”
“That he did.” My father’s wolf is approaching, strong and intimidating. Regis is a sight to behold. He has many years of experience and training, and it shows.
“How can he talk in this form?” one of Colton’s men whispers.
“Quiet,” Colton hisses. “What’s going on here? I demand to know what’s going on!”
