“What can I say?” My father shifts to his human form and stares at the man in front of him. “I’m here because of your attempted murder of my son and his allies, because of your crimes against the Goddess’ laws, and because of your treatment of lower-ranked pack members.”
I can almost see the wheels turning in Colton’s head. “Your son…”
“You attacked an alpha’s son,” my father bellows. “And almost killed one of the twin heirs of Emerald Moon.”
“They spied on us and tried to get inside knowledge on our pack!” Colton yells.
“Your actions are a breach of our laws,” Dad growls. “Furthermore, it was brought to our attention that you and your men misuse your power over she-wolves and lower ranks.” He furrows his brows in a dangerous glare. “This will end today.”
“We will never submit to you,” Colton hisses.
“I hoped you’d say that. Our alliance will show you how we deal with rapists and murderers.”
Out of the far corner of my eyes, I can see a figure sneaking by some buildings. The area is mostly empty, aside from some smaller buildings. When she comes closer, I notice she is a small, skinny woman.
I recognize her from our stay here. She was one of the girls Colton presented to us to use to our pleasure, as he called it. She is one of Freya’s friends, Gina, I think. I link Anders instantly. The girl on the left! Make sure she stays out of the battle.
Anders reacts instantly, using the moment of distraction to approach the young woman. He shifts, clasping his hand around her mouth and carefully dragging her away. She fights him first before her gaze falls on me, and I nod at her. Anders puts his finger on his lips before letting her go. I can see understanding dawn on her while Anders whispers something to her. She sets off again, quietly disappearing past the few buildings and back into the forest.I told her Freya is safe and that she and the others should hide and not come out until this is over.
Good! I wouldn’t put it past Colton or one of their cowardly warriors to use them as shields.
I shift my attention back to Colton. His face is red in anger now, as he is losing his cool. “I can do whatever I please with my pack members. The low ranks weaken our blood and sully our kind,” he hisses.
“Then there is nothing else to discuss,” Dad says, shifting back to his lycan.
“We are fighting for the Goddess!” Colton yells. “Kill the female warriors first! They are the weakest.”
A bunch of his pathetic men turn toward my sister, and I snort. Oh, I pity them already. Our she-wolves are going to have a field day with them. Blood Moon’s warriors rush toward Aurelia’s group and clash against them with full force. More and more warriors join, turning the whole place into a battlefield. The air fills with growls, the snapping of teeth, and the biting scent of blood. Elias is targeting a few wolves directly, which I assume means they are ones he has a personal issue with.
The white snow around us is soon covered in red.
Colton is still surrounded by his men, albeit now in his wolf form. This guy belongs to me, I think as fury fills me. For Freya, for Amaryllis, and all the other innocents! I’m about to make my way towards him when I feel it… a sense of foreboding, before my stomach churns, my chest constricting like something is pressing on my lungs.
I gasp, my eyes widening, as I feel an excruciating pain filling me.
FREYA!
*FREYA*
It’s going to be hours while we wait here in the darkness of the night. I’m so glad I’m not alone, though. Flora and I decided to stay close to the portal in case of an emergency and because it’s not too close to the pack.
The view is magnificent. Thick white snow covers everything, making the entire area look almost majestic. The full moon illuminates the space, but instead of a silver light, we are all covered in a gentle blue.
For a long while, only silence accompanies us until we hear Max’s mighty roar ripping apart the silence of the night. In the distance, we can hear the sounds of the battle.
“It’s begun,” Aurel says quietly.
Beta Edward nods, his face furrowed in concentration. He is quite a pretty man and more on the lean side, unusual for a wolf of his rank.
Flora hands me a cup of tea while I absent-mindedly chew on one of the chocolate bars Finn gave me. I think I’m addicted to this stuff. Chocolate and burgers. “Why did Colton and his men do all of these things?” I ask into the silence.
Aurel looks at me shortly, a sad look in his eyes.
“I’ve seen what it does to the girls,” I muse. “I’ve heard them cry and beg.” I pause. “Barely anyone makes it past twenty-five.”
Flora stares at me. “What?”
“Slaves in this pack don’t get old,” I admit sadly, realizing that this is one truth I haven’t told them yet. “I hope everyone I left behind is still alive.”
