Shaking my head, I whispered firmly. “No.”
No what if’s.
My head was still cloudy with thoughts when I stepped out of the bathroom. A quick glance at the clock showed it was about ten minutes past 12pm. How had I overslept that much?
Was he even around?
I felt compelled to go check. But quickly dismissed the thought. Even though his face had been less deadpan since our moment in the office, there were still rules I needed to follow.
After the sex, he had pulled up his briefs. And I adjusted my gown. With no words, I rushed out.
Every form of intimacy had vanished almost immediately. I didn’t know how to feel with the lingering sense of fresh orgasm wracking my body. But when I went to report a case a few hours later to him, he didn’t seem so…stiff.
Perhaps it was just my imagination.
His strides to meetings weren’t as fast. Almost like he was slowing down to match my pace. His jaw wasn’t set in the familiar clench.
But his eyes…the familiar irritation was gone. Still held nothing.
I wished they would. For once, I wished they would show something and not leave me…hanging?
The rest of the week went the same way. But his responses were still curt. His coffee schedule didn’t change.
And my workload didn’t budge. No less, no more. He was distant yet…not.
I didn’t know how to explain it. It just was what it was.
No reference was made to our moment. Not that I expected any. And everything carried on… ‘normally.’
But that was for him. I, on the other hand. Well, I didn’t know.
I didn’t know how to feel at the thought that my boss had railed me on his desk. I didn’t know how to feel that he said nothing of it. I didn’t know how to feel that everything carried on ‘normally.’
I hadn’t expected anything different. But I didn’t know how to feel about that.
Shrugging on a sunflower pleated sundress, I reached for my phone on the dressing table. My eyes widened when I took in the missed calls. Ten.
And it was from Sarah.
Crap.
Just again, it started to buzz. And I picked it instantly.
“You know, I thought you had bailed on me.” I could feel her eye roll from here.
“Bailed?” I feigned ignorance. Placing the phone between my ear and neck as I moved toward the bed.
I cringed when I spotted a drool stain on one of the pillows. Just how tired had I been?
Moving the pillow with one hand, I took my seat on the bed. My eyes found my black sandals at a distance. And I tugged it closer.
“You know what today is, right?” Her voice held a hint of fear.
Of course, I did. But she didn’t need to know that just yet.
“Saturday?” I strapped the sandals to my feet.
“Goodness Gracious, Renee!” She gasped in horror.
