“What?” My smile was wide.

She took a moment. “Whoever this is, please give the phone back to Renee.”

I snickered silently.

“I can’t believe you forgot what day it is, Renee. I was looking forward to the surprise, just like we talked about. How could you forget?” She sounded extremely disappointed.

It was nice to know she cared much for her brother.

Still, it took everything in me to stifle my laugh. “I didn’t forget, Sarah.” I tried to sound as reassuring as possible. “Is that all the faith you have in me?”

I pushed my hair back. I rose to stare at my reflection. “I know it’s Damien’s birthday today. I already made a list of things to get for the little surprise, just like you suggested. I was just heading out when you called.”

The relief could be heard in her breath. “You had me worried for a second there.” I suddenly felt guilty for being silly.

All these probably meant more to her than it did to me. She had said it was her own way of correcting her wrong. She felt guilty for not reaching out to Damien enough.

According to her, if she hadn’t given up on him those years, then maybe things would have turned out differently. So that was her mission. The rest of her limited days in New York would be spent trying to mend their bond.

“I’m already at the mall. I’m excited about this!”

I brought the phone away from my ear at her squeal. It was sometimes hard to believe she was slightly older than I was.

“Me too.” I smiled before ending the call.

Grabbing my bag, I tucked the list into it. The house was eerily quiet as I made my way to the kitchen. I was surprised to find it empty.

Wasn’t Brenda aware of her boss’s birthday? I made a mental note to talk to Fred about it.

“Good morning, Miss Walker.” Fred smiled when I reached the vast compound. I’d informed him of my outing the day before. I smiled in return.

The man was slowly warming his way into my heart. I didn’t know why.

“Where would you like me to take you?” he held the door open. I quickly slid into the backseat. Watching him return to the driver›s side of the car.

I waited for him to get comfortable before quoting out the address. With a curt nod, he drove off.

“Fred?” I called out as we swerved between traffic.

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Do you know what today is?”

His eyes met mine from the mirror. “It’s November fifteen.”

Of course, Fred would answer that way.

“I mean. Is there any special occasion today?”

“Ah, yes,” he replied immediately. “It’s the boss’s birthday.”

So he knew.

“Does Brenda know this too?”

He nodded. “Yes. However, the boss gives her a day off on this day.”

I slowly nodded. Suddenly there were more things I wanted to ask. But before I could, he spoke again.
