Another thing I found interesting was his sister. Sarah had also approached me. Our talk had been brief as I still lacked words to say to her. But she’d invited me for a drink.

A date is what she called it. And I couldn’t decline.

She seemed like a happy person. Those cherry attendants who smiled endlessly at you when you needed help was the perfect way to describe her.

Though I still found it quite weird that they seemed to have a strained relationship. But it was none of my business.

I was only this invested because of the date. And it had ended. So should any thoughts of him.

…Which was why I would return the ring… at the end of the day.

He had asked me to keep it, but I couldn’t. I had received too much already. Taking the expensive ring felt like daylight robbery.

Slapping the cube to one corner of the desk, I turned on the computer. Refocusing my attention on what mattered.

His schedule was free. Almost free. Except for the conference he had by 2 p.m. today.

Perhaps his free schedule is why he hadn’t called yet. I hadn’t seen him or spoken to him today, which was a good thing for me.

Closing the calendar, I opened my mail when I noticed a new notification. A small smile tugged my lips as I read through the document. It was an instruction from Mr. Don, with an attached case.

Assignment: Draft a brief of the above case.

It was definitely weird that Mr. Don had sent an assignment. But something told me he had been directed by my boss. Call it instinct.

A few hours passed, and I immersed myself in my work, until it was 1:30 p.m.

Rising with a small stretch and a yawn, I grabbed the necessary files for the meeting before dialling his line.

It took a while, but he finally picked. “Miss Walker,” he grunted.

Restraining an eye roll, I glanced from the clock to the files in my hand. “Your meeting with the team heads starts in twenty-seven minutes.”

I imagined his stiff nod before the line beeped.

Inhaling a much-needed deep breath, I exited my office. And in no time, reached the hall.

As expected, all heads of departments were present, in their usual pristine suits and ties, and their outright stares.

Stares. How could I have forgotten that?

Their stares were like needles pricking each pore on my body. But with my head raised high and files confidently in hand, I walked in.

They really had to suck it up. My dreams weren’t a joke.

I let out a breath once I took a vacant seat just beside the head. Adding an extra sass as I tugged on the end of my cheap suit.

Not like anyone was looking, though.

The room remained dead silent. Like a graveyard. You could almost hear a pin drop.

With narrowed eyes, I subtly moved my head around the large, round table to count them. They were twenty, and each head remained stiff, sort of like robots.

I didn’t know what I had expected walking into a room full of pompous beings. But it certainly wasn’t this.

Deciding not to bother my head, I tugged my eyes from them, placing it on the file in front of me.

The meeting would be focused on revisiting growth strategies and long-term goals; a typical one for an impending deal.
