I was halfway through the file when I heard footsteps… commanding footsteps.

I didn’t need to lift my head to know it was him, but I did anyway. Instantly all feet rose with a deep bow as he walked in.

He oozed confidence and power. And it was in times like these I saw him for his achievements. Indeed he was worth the billions he controlled.

His eyes remained blank, and his lips set into a thin line. Ignoring the increased tempo of my heart, I blinked away the stray thoughts.

After what seemed to be minutes of watching his long strides, he finally took his seat, at the head of the table. Beside me.

With a single nod, he acknowledged us. And we took our seats.

Without waiting for any signal, I placed the files in front of him. Soon, he began.

The meeting lasted forty minutes. And finally, it was over.

I watched the team heads file out, until it was just both of us left. The air was suddenly thick as the silence became even louder.

For a brief moment, I considered fleeing, like the last time. But before I could follow through, his voice halted me.

“Miss Walker.”

Some strands of hair fell into his eyes as he lifted his head to me. His arms were crossed on his chest. And without warning, images of everything suddenly came barrelling down.

“How was it?”

It was the best hea-

Wait. How was what?

“Eh?”

He gave me a once-over. “The meeting. What did you think about the strategy planning?”

Oh…of course. The meeting. Why was he suddenly requesting feedback?

“It was the best. You...headed it so well,” I cringed immediately after the stupid statement left my lips.

There was a brief pause before he angled his smooth jaw at me. If he sensed anything off, he didn’t show. Instead, he nodded. “It’s good to know you enjoyed it.”

I noticed a glint in his eyes. Just like it came, it was gone. Or had I imagined it?

“There would be other meetings like this. We have to keep them up to date and ensure they’re in tandem with the goals,” the thick veins in his hand bulged as he shut the file.

Those hands…

“Any questions, Miss Walker?”

I shook my head. The only questions I had were for me. To ask myself what the hell all this was.

“No,” I immediately voiced when his stare remained unwavering.
