If I don’t go in there, hell knows where I’ll end up. The movie’s changed so much that I might completely disappear if I get on a plane and head away from the island.

I still don’t quite understand the rules of this world.

What I do know is Brighton Academy is the setting of the movie. Everything takes place in that school or around it. All the important characters are here.

Is there even a world out there beyond this island?

There’s too much uncertainty for me to get on the plane and leave Brighton Academy behind.

Bowing to what Miles wants is not an option.

Neither is giving into Kaz’s father’s demands.

I have only one choice.

One colossally stupid choice.

A huge sigh shudders out of me. Working here is asking for trouble. I’ll be completely at Hawk’s mercy.

Right where the lion sleeps.

I can’t do it.

Spinning around again, I start to walk away when a thick woman with brown skin and dark eyes turns the corner.

I jump in surprise. “Miss Linda!”

“Do you know me?”

“I—er… not exactly.” She’s a minor character that pops up in the latter half of the movie when Catherine, driven out of school by Hawk’s enemies, goes looking for a job. One that offers room and board. A job that I’m taking now.

“Are you here to see Hawk?” Miss Linda asks.

“No.”

She gives me a thoughtful look.

“I’m really not,” I insist.

Her dark eyes continue to scan me.

I shift from side to side, wondering what she’s looking for. Wondering if I’ll measure up.

She stops and waves her hand toward the gate. A small door that I didn’t realize was there seamless moves aside.

She smiles. “Come in.”

“I… I probably shouldn’t.” For so many reasons.

“You’re here for the job, aren’t you?”

Except that one.

I nod slowly.

She dips her chin. “Let’s have a chat over some tea.”

“It’s okay.”
