“That’s dangerous.”

“I couldn’t let the child drown,” Dillon said. “I had a long talk with him after and told him that it was very important that he not tell anyone my secret. His mother reinforced it. Zeke is a good kid and a smart one, so I’m sure that he’ll keep my secret. After all, he drew me as a human and not a wolf on the card.”

“I hope, for your sake, that you are right,” Ethan said.

“I’m sure that they can be trusted. If not, well, what’s done is done,” Dillon said. “Like I said, I couldn’t just stand by and watch him drown.”

Ethan replied, “I guess not.”

It was a relatively quiet day, which let Dillon get caught up on his paperwork. Ethan went out on the town, visiting friends, and checking in with everyone, making sure that they were okay and that nothing suspicious was going on.

Dillon had just finished when his phone rang. It was Brent.

“Hey, what’s going on?” Dillon asked.

“Remember the mercenary who was bragging about killing Andy?” Brent asked.

“Yeah.”

“He’s disappeared. No one has seen or heard from him for more than twenty-four hours. He had lunch at the resort yesterday and then that was it.”

“He didn’t mention whether he was leaving or going out on the mountain?”

“Not to my knowledge. No one seems to know anything because they’ve put out the unofficial word that he’s missing. The hunters are out looking for signs of him, now.”

“Is his stuff gone?”

“I think that some of it might be. His room looks like someone ransacked it,” Brent said. “It is a mess.”

“I wonder if he decided to leave in a hurry for some reason,” Dillon said.

“That is a possibility. Or it is a possibility that someone made him disappear,” Brent said. “Listen, I’ve got to go. I’ll keep you updated.”

Dillon thought about the situation. While he wasn’t upset that the man was gone, if he was killed by a shifter, it could cause a boat load of trouble.

“I need you to take care of things here,” Dillon told his manager. “I have some business to take care of.”

“Sure thing, Boss,” the man said.

Dillon headed over to Daniel’s garage.

“Dillon, what’s wrong?”

“Why do you ask that?”

“You never come here unless something is wrong,” Daniel pointed out.

Dillon had to admit that Daniel wasn’t wrong.

“The mercenary that the Faisons hired has gone missing,” Dillon said. “Do you know anything about that?”

“What do you mean that he is missing?” Daniel asked.

“Brent said that he had lunch at the resort yesterday. He didn’t say anything to anyone about leaving town or going up on the mountain. His room looks like it had been ransacked and he hasn’t been heard from for more than a day.”

“Hmm,” Daniel said. “While I would have been happy to make that man disappear since he killed Andy, I didn’t do it. I’ve been so busy here at the garage that I didn’t even have a chance to shift and go on patrol yesterday.”

Dillon looked at Daniel for a minute and then nodded. He believed him.
