That made him smile. “Yeah. I’d appreciate that.”

They went to the nurse’s station, and she went to work on the computer without saying anything, then disappeared, only to return a minute later with the ID bracelet.

“So, when her boyfriend gets here, does he get one, too?”

She squinted her eyes at him, like she was confused. “Only the parents get them.”

That didn’t answer his question.

“She’s a great person and a phenomenal doctor,” Rose said quietly as she attached the plastic to his wrist. “She’s going to be a wonderful mother.”

It felt like a warning rather than an observation, and he wondered what Olivia had told her.

He glanced down at the writing now attached to his wrist. Where it said baby, it read ‘Sawyer Evan Mitchell,’ with Pete’s name listed as father.

Seeing it in writing seemed to make it more real.

“Well, then little Sawyer is in luck, because I’m a pretty great dad, and lucky for him, I have experience. So he’ll have two devoted parents.”

Chapter Twelve

Maverick

Olivia’s family returned from dinner, and he decided to take the opportunity to go home, pack an overnight bag, and make sure his house was ready to bring a baby into it.

Fuck, he didn’t have any baby furniture.

He called Gabe, the oldest of his younger brothers. He had kids, so he was the obvious choice for help.

“What’s up, Mav?” he answered in a chipper tone.

“I don’t exactly know how to say this, so I’m just going to come out and say it. I just learned I have a newborn son, and when I say newborn, I mean he was born earlier today.”

“Are you shitting me?”

“I am not. It’s a long story, and I promise I will tell you about it soon. Right now, though, I need your help. I need some basic furniture for when he comes home tomorrow. Like, at least a bassinet and changing table. Can you help me out?”

“I can do that, but I am going to expect full details.”

Maverick smiled into the receiver. He could always count on his brothers when he needed them.

“I know, and I will tell you everything, I promise. Just not now. I have to get back to the hospital.”

He wanted to be there in case this alleged boyfriend of hers was real and showed up.

“Let me ask you this—is this hush-hush or can I enlist the other brothers for help?”

“Nick knows, for the record, but I don’t care who helps; it’s not like this is something I’m going to hide. I just need it done before tomorrow, probably late morning—early afternoon-ish.”

“What’s my budget?”

“There is none. Just get the best quality. I don’t care what it costs.”

“If you would have given me notice, I could’ve built something.”

“Well, considering I just found out today, that would have been hard to do.”

“You just found out today?Man, I can’t wait to hear this story. What about his mom?”
