Good. My girl needs to be wearing only my jersey.

At least for now.

Until we figure this shit out between us Heartbreakers.

“Because…” Wolfgang’s face is red in seconds before he curses in Russian and points to Wyatt.

“Wyatt! Go somewhere else!”

The man laughs as he rises up and gives Damien his bet money.

Or date money.

“Oh, my bad. I lost the Heartbreaker privilege long ago,” he states with a wink, but all of us just stare at him with deep frowns.

“You know we never wanted to break, Wyatt,” I mutter and notice how his smile further widens. I can see the level of understanding in his eyes.

“Just like I know it was going to shatter whether you guys liked it or not,” he counters and slides his wallet back into his pocket. “Besides, you all know my eyes were on a different prize.”

He heads to the door before any of us can reply.

“You guys enjoy the time you have with one another while you can,” he urges us as he reaches for the door handle. “Things are going to get busy, and if you want to actually solidify your friendships and bonds, you should do so. We already know what’s at stake, but we’re going to experience what it’s like to be hockey players in a ravenous world filled with competition. It’s not going to be pretty, so best be confident in getting what you want.” He opens the door and mutters, “Or else you’ll just lose each other all over again.”

We remain silent as we stare at the door that closes shut.

“He’s right, you know,” Ace admits and peers around the rest of us. “It’s gonna get brutal soon.”

“Then we best get our guards up and ensure nothing brings us down,” Wolfgang encourages. I know he’s up for the challenges ahead.

Only I wonder if he can be as confident with his feelings.

“You wanna go out to eat tonight?” Damien suggests. “I’ll pay.”

“With our fucking money,” Ace huffs. “Fucking puck.”

“Don’t be a sore loser.” Wolfgang elbows him before he gets his wallet out and takes four hundred-dollar bills. “Here. I’ll cover sore loser over here.”

“It’s not like I don’t have money,” Ace argues, even though no one stated that.

“I know you’re rich. I’m just being generous because you backed me up,” Wolfgang says, but I feel like he would have sided with me not getting in a fight but wanted to make the betting wars a bit fun with Wyatt in the picture. “Let’s get the car started. Probably gonna take us thirty minutes to get over here to pick up these twolove birds.”

He says the last words mockingly, but it’s missing that bite.

Unlike Jayce who fumes at the idea of a romantic relationship between two men, I know Wolfgang is tempted.

He wants to see if we’d judge him for his feelings.

“If it takes that long, you guys better walk your asses over,” Ace grunts and gets up to stretch. “I gotta go back home to check on my grandma, then I’ll join you guys for dinner.”

“I can come if you want,” Damien offers. “Haven’t seen your granny in a while.”

“We can all come,” I encourage. “She’d think you brought the whole hockey team came to say hi to her.”

“She’d love that.” Ace’s smile lights up his whole face while his eyes practically twinkle. His grandma raised him for the majority of his life. Only recently did his parents attempt to reconcile and get back into their lives.

What some children will do for that heritage money.

If only they knew Grandma Harvey changed her will.
