She mouths something that makes my heart skip a few beats.
“My place tonight.”
Fuck. We’re going to jump right into this, aren’t we?
“She’s shy, yet knows what she wants,” Maddox mutters to me.
I bob my head. “Just gotta get it out of her.”
“Are you two done being protective lovers?” Dr. Bridgett ponders as she’s already sitting down and gathering a bunch of files.
“Protective lovers?” we question and watch as she looks back to give us a look.
“I already know you’re dating Mikayla,” Dr. Bridgett notes as she points her pen in Maddox’s direction. Then that pen is on me. “But if you’re trying not to make it obvious that you’re interested in her, you’re failing pretty badly. One photo of you and everyone across Canada would know you’re crushing on Mikayla Cross Johnson.”
“Wouldn’t be bad,” Maddox dares to say. “Make it a scandal that brings views.”
“I’m sure neither of you would care, but Mikayla would worry about her dad’s reputation, as well as her own and her internship,” she voices carefully. “I encourage whatever you guys want to do since it’s your life, but remember, every action has consequences.” She looks away.
“Only if you’re confident in what you wish to claim, should you fight for it with everything you got,” she mumbles. “Once you reach that level of need, no one can destroy what is meant to be yours.” She’s on her computer, typing a few things and pressing enter.
“Now, shoo. If Mikayla’s allergies pick up again, let me know. I’ll likely have those medicines ordered and delivered tonight with an emergency request.” She looks at me briefly. “Good job in carrying emergency medication with you for your important friends. It shows you truly care about their well-being and health.”
“Thank you.”
We say our goodbyes and head down the hall.
“Are we telling the guys tonight?” I ask Maddox as we turn down the hall toward the rink.
“Let’s wait ‘til we’re together and alone. Then we’ll let them know their options,” Maddox encourages. “You sure you want this?”
“More than I want to be a hockey champion,” I admit and put my hands behind my head. “You know it’s a big deal when I’m putting hockey on the line. “
“True,” Maddox admits and comes to a stop.
I follow suit and watch when he lets out a breath and runs his hands through his hair.
“Fuck. Being around her drives me fucking insane.”
“In a good way.”
“In a very good way,” Maddox admits. He side-glances my way. “She likes piercings.”
That has me smiling widely.
“I noticed.”
“Fuck, we’re going to have to work hard as hell to have more time,” he urges. “Once we finalize schedules next week, let’s compare and make sure we’re on the same page with this.”
“Cool.” I’m down for that. “Then?”
“Then we do what we should have done five years ago,” Maddox whispers. “Show our girl what it’s like to date her Heartbreaker Kings.”
This is a challenge worth fighting for.
