“Doesn’t matter.”

He released me, and I rushed away, not daring to look back. If they were following me, they’d make their presence known anyway. I stealthily weaved through the crowd, not touching any vampires. Relief filled me when I burst through the doors, the night air hitting my face. My ears rang from the sudden silence after being in such a loud atmosphere. I stumbled down the street, my mind racing from what had happened. I stopped in my tracks, turning in a full circle, trying to get my bearings. I didn’t know this city at all.

I turned down a side street, searching for anything I recognized as I tried to find the building I’d left my bag in. Until I was suddenly grabbed from behind, a hand covering my mouth. I was lifted off the ground, and I fought uselessly as I was carried into the closest building.

The hand left my mouth, and my back slammed into a wall. My eyes fell on the vampire who’d grabbed me, and I sucked in a breath. It was Pax. Or Viggo. Either way, he was pissed.

“What the hell are you doing here?” he asked sharply. “Pretending to be one of us?”

It had to be Pax. My racing heart calmed slightly at that.

“I saw you days ago, and you were human,” he accused. “You masked your scent. I don’t smell your blood like I did that night.”

“Let me leave—”

He grabbed my wrists when I tried pushing him away. “Answer my fucking question. Why are you here?”

“Because I can’t go home,” I snarled. “You saw me running that night. They want me dead. I’m hiding.”

“From the humans?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I saw them kill my friend.” My voice cracked when I thought of Lisa. “They don’t want witnesses.”

“You can’t stay here.”

“Why didn’t you tell them about me?” I asked, curiosity getting the best of me.

“I don’t know,” he gritted out. “I felt bad for you. And if I told them, they’d kill you.”

“I just want to leave,” I told him quietly. “I have no intention of hurting you or your friends.”

“Not sure I believe that either.”

“Then why did you keep my secret?” I snapped.

“Fuck,” he muttered. “This is going to end badly.”

“Just let me walk away,” I pleaded. “I’ll leave and never come back—”

He laughed humorlessly, grabbing the necklace they’d locked on me. “This makes that impossible.”

I scoffed. “Please.”

He backed away, not giving me any other answers. “You’re not a threat right now. But if you become one, I’ll kill you myself.”

With that, he spun around and left the building. I stared at him for a moment before moving to leave. I needed to get my bag and get the hell out of this city.

Zan

“Ican’t believe you finally used the necklace that Dad gave you,” Viggo mused before downing his drink. “And on a newbie?”

I didn’t answer, leaning back in the chair as I thought about Kali. The way she’d run out of Impulse had me believing that she’d try to leave the city as soon as she could. Pax left after her to follow so we could find out where she was staying. It would be interesting to see if she succeeded. Not that it mattered. She wouldn’t get far with that necklace on. I’d be able to track her anywhere she went.
