“I do,” I argued. “We need to leave.”
“We have time before it gets dark.” Warner dropped his hand from my jaw when I backed away. “We’ll wait for Garrett to get here and see if there are any other safe houses around here.”
My heart was beating painfully as I nodded. We needed to leave. But why was there a tiny part of me that wanted to see Zan again? I bit my tongue, forcing that away. Zan had already told me that he wanted the people from the house dead. If he found us, people were going to get killed. I didn’t think he wanted me dead, but what about Warner? And the other Clovers? I couldn’t chance it. We had to get the hell out of here before night fell.
“If Garrett isn’t here in a couple of hours, then we leave on our own,” I said.
“Fine. We need to tell Paul,” Warner grumbled. “As much as I want to, we can’t just leave him here alone.”
As if knowing we were talking about him, the door swung back open. I spun around to face Paul as he stood in the open doorway.
“What’s going on?” he asked, his eyes going between me and Warner.
“We might have to leave sooner,” Warner said, grabbing my hand and leading me back into the stuffy cabin.
Once we were all back inside, I pulled my hand from Warner’s and moved toward the kitchen area to get some water. My mind was racing, and I wondered how the hell Zan had found out where I was. And why he left the apples instead of just storming in here. It didn’t make any sense.
“Why would we have to leave?” Paul questioned with a suspicious frown.
“The vampires might have found us,” Warner said tightly. “Once Garrett gets here, we should go.”
Paul looked between us, a scowl on his face. “Ever since we saved you two, there’s been nothing but trouble.”
“It wasn’t our choice to kidnap a Kane vampire,” I shot back.
“You feel bad for the vampire?” Paul asked quietly.
“No,” I snapped. “I’m just saying that’s where the trouble started. Not from rescuing me and Warner.”
“We aren’t going anywhere until Garrett gets here.” Paul patted his pants pocket. “I have the keys to the car.”
Warner rolled his eyes. “We aren’t going to leave without you. Or without talking to Garrett.”
“Good.” Paul leveled me with a glare before turning toward the bedroom. “I was the one on watch all night. I’m going to sleep for a while. Wake me when Garrett gets here.”
He disappeared into the bedroom, slamming the door behind him. Warner grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the couch, not letting go until we were both sitting.
“Is there anything I should know?” he asked, keeping his voice low so Paul couldn’t hear.
“What do you mean?”
“About the vampires. Or when you were in their city.” He hesitated. “There’s something different, Kali.”
“With me?” I asked with a frown. “No, there’s not—”
“With us,” he clarified. “You used to tell me everything. But you’re keeping secrets from me.”
“Only because I don’t want to hurt you,” I whispered, my chest tightening.
“You slept with him,” Warner murmured, trying to hide his disgust. “Was it just sex? Or do you actually care for him?”
“He saved my life,” I admitted. “He didn’t have to do that.”
“He’s using you for something. He’s a vampire. They want to control everything. That’s why we became Clovers. To protect humansfromthem.”
“I know.” I covered my face with my hands. “I…don’t know. It was a stupid thing to do.”
Hands circled my wrists before he pulled my hands from my face. “I don’t hate you. I don’t blame you. He fucked with your head.”
