Page 121 of Doctor I Do

I like his house. It’s loving, and everywhere I turn, I think of us. I want our baby to be welcomed and brought to this home.

Alex argues it’s too small. Which is ridiculous. She will have her own room, and the house is modern, with more than enough accessories. Kids don’t need all this. They simply need us. I know we’re already going to shower the baby with love. The way Alex pampers me, you’d think I was the queen. The cooked food, medication, massages, and the coffee. I had to make the switch to decaf because I couldn’t deal with his doctor's comments anymore. I just want the taste anyway.

I get it, he loves the baby and me, but damn, sometimes him being a doctor is a lot. I have to remind him I’m his wife, not a patient. On the positive, it always ends up in hot sex.

Since the wedding, life has been busy. The complete move here, with not a single item left at my rental with Maddison. The home office has only just been finished being built. It needed an upgrade to accommodate what I’ll need to work from home.

Speaking of…my phone rings.

“Mom. Hi,” I answer.

“I’m just popping over. Alex said you were working from home today,” she says, and I can tell she’s driving.

“I am. I have a new sample of the fall line. Did you want to come to help me approve it?” I ask with a smile, peering around the room to look for the box of samples. It just arrived.

I have accepted their help as a way of continuing our new relationship. Plus, I don’t have time to train anyone new right now. I’m twenty-eight weeks pregnant, so to hire and train a new person to add to the business all while I’m still adjusting, is silly. This way, they help me, and I can still learn all from my house. The office and warehouse are not too far away if I need to go there for any reason.

The door rings, so I wander down and open the door.

“Hi, Mom,” I say with a pinched brow when I notice she’s holding something. “What’s that?”

“Oh, it’s for you.” She hands me a white gift bag, and I take it as I close the door behind her.

“What is it?” I ask, unable to help myself.

She chuckles. “Open it and find out.”

I walk to the table and lower the bag and open it. I pull out a long, white, flowy dress. The little flowers are beautiful.

I’m so confused.

“It’s beautiful, and thanks…” I trail off, still not understanding. There’s nothing else inside the bag.

“Your father and I designed it, and had it made,” she replies softly.

Now I’m even more confused. “Why?”

“Your friends, me, and Alex decided if you weren’t going to organize a baby shower, we would.”

My hand flies to smother my gasp.

It dawns on me, my parents made this special dress for me to wear to my very own surprise baby shower.

“No,” I mumble into my hand.

“Yes. It starts in one hour, and any minute, a team will arrive to do your hair and makeup. Also, to set the house up for guests.”

I drop my hand and look down at myself in my Lululemon leggings and shirt. “Do I have time for a shower?”

I hope so.

“Of course,” she replies.

“Oh,” I say, as a wave of disappointment washes over me. I know it’s not traditional, but I wish Alex could come and celebrate with me today.

“Alex needed to pick up a couple of things, but he’ll come near the end,” she says, smiling.

“The end?” I ask.
