I looked over at her as she raced through the corridors beside me.
Her face was creased with worry lines as she struggled to keep up with my long strides.
No, I thought. I won’t tell her. Not until there’s no other option.

The facility’s alarm system blared and red warning lights flashed, turning the hallways into a hellish landscape.
More alien males and their mates emerged in the doorways of their suites.
They looked up and down, tying their robes closed, confused and unsure about what was taking place.
I wished I could have told them to leave, that we were under attack, that they needed to leave right now…
But I didn’t want to start a panic.
And, perhaps a little more selfishly, I didn’t want them clogging up the hallways any more than they already were.
It was every alien for himself and I had someone more important to take care of.
I squeezed Emily’s hand and she squeezed it right back.
Unbelievable, I thought, that our bodies were deeply entwined, enjoying each other with carnal pleasure just a few short minutes earlier.
Now we were running for our lives.
