We were jumping out of a plane and letting go of our senses.

And I was going to take the leap of faith that we could be exclusive and without any restraints.

We were jumping for ourselves and for each other. Only, she didn’t know the last part.

We boarded the plane, and we suited up with our harnesses and everything was triple-checked. We were tandem jumping with our instructor. Once we reached the elevation where we could jump, the instructors were repeating the instructions.

“We will freefall for about one minute. After we get to about 6000 feet, we will pull the shute, and coast until we get to our drop zone. Do you see it below?” Jaz said.

We both nodded. We were ready to go. So many emotions ran through us. “On a count of three, we’re going to exit the plane, then Star and Jake will exit to join us.” I nodded again. If I didn’t make it out alive, I’d at least have this memory.

“One.” She adjusted our harnesses and made sure we were connected properly.

“Two” She adjusted my goggles and made sure my gloves were on.

“Three”. She pulled both of our harnesses and made sure we were tight.

Here goes nothing!

We jumped. I’m so glad I agreed to jump with Jaz and let Star jump with Jake because there’s no way Star was going to jump otherwise. The freefall was euphoric! I held my breath and closed my eyes, biting my lips.

“Open your eyes and breathe, Kale!” Jaz said into my ears. I took a few breaths and then opened my eyes. The initial view of the land below me, the landscape, and how everything looked like initial squares, rectangles, and was absolutely beautiful. The sun was setting behind us. We went through a few clouds, and I was mesmerized by the absolute beauty surrounding me. We were falling from a perfectly safe plane, but my senses were overloaded with everything going on around me. It was too late to turn around now.

Looking around, everything was clear. The last time I smelled this fresh air was when I was on the mountains. The crisp fresh air was refreshing and much needed. I looked above me and saw Star with her instructor as they were freefalling above us. I look at the glove and we still have a few more feet to fall before it’s time to pull the chute. I’m so enchanted by everything, I’m not sure if she’s taken a breath yet. Her eyes are visibly closed, from what I can see. A few seconds later she opens her eyes and looks around. She’s enamored as I am.

We reached the point where we can pull the chute and once it’s pulled, I look around again and it’s like visiting a new world. I see the desert, the mountains, the ocean or a lake, I see everything and it’s absolutely amazing. Aside from the loud pounding of the wind in my ears, my senses are overloaded and I’m so glad we took this jump!

“Star!” I yelled at her as Jake pulled their chute.

She looks at me but doesn’t say anything. I’m not sure if she could hear me or not.

“Will you be my girlfriend?” I yell back to her.

She starts laughing.

Wind pulls us in a different direction, but Jaz and Jake are trained enough to keep us on track.

The sun was setting in the horizon, and I couldn’t get over the amazing view! I would definitely skydive again in the future! There’s nothing that would make me feel this free again.

“So, will you be my girlfriend, Star?” I yelled back over the wind. She still doesn’t respond to me, so I drop it for now.

“Prepare to land. Remember to lift your legs, so that we can slide in,” Jaz reminded me.

Once we landed, I felt a bit disoriented, but nonetheless I had the most energy I’ve ever had in my life. I watched Star and Jake land like professionals. He was a good instructor to have with her. Once we were all standing, we hugged the instructors and then I picked Star up and twirled her around.

“For the third time, Star, will you be my girlfriend?” I asked her. I didn’t give her a chance to answer, and I kissed her immediately.

“Why do you want a girl like me, Kale? You can have anyone!” She answered, nearly ripping my heart in two.

“You’re perfect for me, Star! We took the jump from the plane together, why can’t you take a jump and take a chance with me?” I yelled. My voice was getting horse.

“Of course, Kale! I’d be glad to be exclusively yours and only yours.” She finally answered, settling my nerves. My adrenaline was still in overdrive. We had to get back to Groveton for our classes and once we did, we had a lot of things that needed to be addressed.

“Thank you, Kale. This was the best day ever!” She kissed me again.

“No, thank you, Star. You’re truly amazing!”
