“Please.”

He gets two wine glasses and white wine.

“Tell me about Max and Willow,” I say as I pick up my glass and take a sip.

Hunter chuckles, “She was a nun. He’s an assassin like me. I met him a couple of months before everything happened with us.”

“How does a nun end up married to an assassin?”

He takes a swallow of his wine and sets it down on the island, “It’s a long story. Willow’s father was involved with a church and convent that were neither really a church nor a convent. It was a way for them to abuse women and girls and eventually make money by selling them through auctions. The same men took Mia. Willow met Max through her brother. They saw each other at her brother Xander’s wedding in Italy. They spent the weekend together. It was supposed to be one forbidden weekend, and that was it. But Max was gone for her by the end of the weekend. The rest, as they say, is history.”

I sigh, “He seems to really love her. Is he a good father?”

Hunter chuckles, “The best. When Levi was born, she almost died. Max never planned to be a father. He was all the lil man had at the time. He spent hours holding Levi against his bare chest. For a man that never wanted children he took to it like a fish takes to water.”

“Do you want kids?”

He smiles, “Yes I do.”

An alert comes through, and he stands, “Micah is here.”

Hunter walks away and comes back a short while later with a man in a suit, I assume he must be the lawyer.

“Micah, this is Jade. Jade, this is Micah. He’s my lawyer as well as Max’s.”

He’s a short skinny man with dirty blonde hair that’s cut short. Glasses that are too big for him, sit on his face.

“Hello Jade,” he nods.

“Hi,” I say feeling a little out of sorts.

He opens his messenger bag and pulls papers out and hands them to me to sign. I quickly add my signature to the various pages before handing them back to Micah.

He glances at Hunter, “He’s in the basement I assume?”

“Yeah. Let’s get this over with.”

Micah follows behind us after Hunter takes my hand in his.

I’m a little surprised when we get to the basement and Micah has no reaction. It’s business as usual. No big deal.

Hunter chuckles when he notices my expression, “He has seen worse, baby girl.”

Micah walks up to Craig, “Hayden, wake up you need to sign some documents.”

“Stand back,” Hunter says to me, so I do.

Hunter releases Craigs right hand and Micah helps him hold a pen, “Sign your name,” Micah instructs.

Craig shakes his head, “She will be my wife when I die. If these are divorce papers, I won’t sign them.”

Hunter looks at Micah, “Stand back.”

He goes rifling through a drawer and comes back with a long red instrument.

“What’s that?” I ask.

Hunter flashes me a vicious smile, “Cattle prod. It won’t kill him, but it’ll hurt like a bitch. Especially in his state.”
