Of course I feel it. Anyone would.

Zelena’s all kinds of amazing.

“The usual for dinner tonight?” I ask, trying to keep things normal between us even if the new guard and her personal assistant aren’t really listening.

“I guess so.” She seems a little distracted, her gaze moving to Anna and Dave for a second.

A frown darkens her expression, and I can’t figure out what has her looking so concerned.

I take another look at them. Nothing’s changed. Anna’s still vaguely annoyed, and Dave is obliviously pleased with himself. Turning back to Zey, I find her twisting a strand of her long, dark hair around her finger as she looks up at me. I don’t know what she’s about to say, but my heart starts to pound crazy-fast and loud, and I worry that I might miss her words if she speaks while the sound is hammering in my ears.

She’s looking at me that way again, as if she sees something she really likes.

God, she’s so beautiful.

She beckons me in closer, and I lean down, getting in close.

I tune out the crazy pounding in my chest to listen to her low whisper.

“It’s definitely you in the room with me tonight, right?”

Oh, fuck. Did she really just ask if I’m the one who’s with her tonight?

My neck gets a little warm. I can feel the blush creeping up it.

“It’s definitely me,” I murmur back.

“Good. I’m glad.”

My heart does a weird little flutter.

She asked for me. She actually asked for me.

Holy fucking shit. Maybe tonight really is the night.

“You okay, Russ?” she asks, raising her eyebrows.

“Sorry,” I lie. “Just listening to the earpiece. Apparently, they’re ready for you outside.”

She nods, laying back in the seat. “Well, then, let’s get this act on the road.”

“I’ll see you at The Silver Leaf.”

“Can’t wait,” she murmurs, as I close the lid.

The case locks shut, and Anna clears her throat as she moves away from my partner.

“About time,” Anna tells me, her tone clipped and her gaze frosty.

She might try to get me taken off transport duty for this.

Too bad my Alpha is in charge of that.

Archer can’t be close to Zelena, so he needs me to be with her.

There’s nothing her pissed off P.A. could do to convince him otherwise.

Dave opens the door when I give him the nod, and we roll the case carefully out into the hall. That’s when we switch places. I can’t trust anyone else to lead the way. I’m hyperaware of every uneven bit of ground we cover, and I do my best to steer our girl along the smoothest path.
