“Then why would you want to take that chance?” I took a seat on the stool.

“Because I had my whole life planned out since I was a kid. I would graduate high school, go to college, become a great lawyer, meet the man of my dreams, get married, and have children. That was my life’s plan. I didn’t ask for my heart to go bad four years ago, but it did, and I survived. But I’m certainly not going to let it destroy my dream of having a baby. John and I had a serious discussion about it, and he wants a baby too. I’m not going to let what could go wrong stop me from having the one thing that would complete my life. Would you?”

I stared at her blankly for a moment. “I guess not. But there are tests that need to be done prior to you getting pregnant.”

“I’ll do any test necessary.”

“Since Dr. Thomas did your transplant and is retired, I’ll schedule an appointment with Dr. Christian Kind. You’ll also need an OB/GYN specializing in high-risk pregnancies. Do you know if yours does?”

“No, she doesn’t. I just saw her the other day for my yearly exam. I told her I wanted to get pregnant, and she said, unfortunately, she couldn’t treat me because of my transplant.”

“No worries. I know an amazing OB/GYN who you can see. I took out my script pad and wrote down Georgia’s office number. “She’s over at the Kind Medical Center not too far from here.” I handed her the piece of paper. “And I’ll let her know you’ll be making an appointment.”

“Thank you, Charleigh. What about my appointment with Dr. Kind?”

“Let me check his schedule. I’ll be right back.”

I walked out of the room and over to one of the computers. Pulling up Christian’s schedule, I put Lucy in for Friday afternoon.

“You’re in luck. He had a cancellation for this Friday at one o’clock. In the meantime, let’s get some bloodwork done now so all the results will be ready when you meet with Dr. Kind.”

After Lucy left, I saw a couple more patients and went up to Christian's research room.

“Hey, babe.” He smiled when I walked in.

“Hi. I scheduled one of my patients to see you this Friday at one o’clock. I checked your schedule, and you had a cancellation.”

“Okay. What does she need to see me for?”

“Two years ago, Dr. Thomas gave her a new heart. She just told me she and her husband want a baby.”

“Is that so?” His brow arched.

“Shut up. Anyway, I already drew all the necessary bloodwork, so you’ll have the results when she comes in.”

“Perfect.” The corners of his mouth curved upward. “Did you tell her she needs to see a doctor who specializes in high-risk pregnancies?”

“I’m sending her over to Georgia. She said her OB can’t treat her.”

“Excellent. Just make sure her chart is on my desk before Friday so I can review it.”

“I already put it there.”

He wrapped one arm around my waist and pulled me into him. “Has anyone ever told you what an exceptional worker you are?”

“Every day, Dr. Kind.” I smiled as I kissed his lips and walked out of the research room.

My shift ended early because one of the other nurse practitioners asked if she could work part of my shift before hers started because she needed the extra money for a trip she was taking. Who was I to tell her no? After saying goodbye to Christian, I headed to the medical center to see Georgia.

“There you are.” I smiled as I walked into the kitchen area.

“Hey, you. What are you doing here?”

“I came to talk to you. I have a patient who had a heart transplant two years ago. She wants to get pregnant and needs an OB/GYN who specializes in high-risk pregnancies.”

“Perfect. Send her over.”

“I gave her your office number to schedule an appointment,” I said as I walked over to the fridge and grabbed a bottle of water.
