Cassie turns to look at me and her smirk is so damn irritating I feel another strong urge to smack her. “Well, that was interesting. I hear you’ve got a date.”
“Not really.”
“Sounds like it. You better head on home and get ready.”
“Yeah. I do have some other things to do. I’ll see you tomorrow morning.”
“Why don’t we just plan on this for the day after tomorrow? I mean, you might end up spending the night and sleeping through your alarm on your phone.”
“Oh please. I don’t need it. I’ll be here in the morning.”
“We’ll see. Just remember, it’s okay to take time for yourself.”
“All my time is for myself.” I’m all alone. There’s nobody to miss me.”
A lot of different feelings wash over me, including a fear that I’m making a mistake listening to whatever had that smirk on Hank’s face.
What is he thinking? Why does he need to talk to me and what does he think would be good for us?
Shivers dance up and down my spine. I have this strange feeling that tonight is going to be bigger than my decision to leave and work on my career.
That this could be something that really defines what our future looks like.
If we even have one.
CHAPTER 7
Hank
I sit in the little restaurant outside of town, patiently watching the door.
I know she’ll be here. Kat cannot resist a dare or a questionable ask. She’s too curious. If she had any sense of self-preservation she’d stay the hell away from me but she doesn’t. Which is good for me. I need all the help I can get if I’m going to convince Kat that my crazy idea is a good idea.
I see her walk in the door, dressed down in a flannel shirt and pair of ripped-up jeans. Laughter tickles my tummy. This woman.
She’s a fighter.
She sits down when the server brings her over. “Hello, Hank.”
“You look beautiful,” I say, reaching out to grasp her hand. A shiver dances across her fingers and I feel it all the way to my toes. I feel her rapid breathing and then the way she seems to build a barrier around the area. Around herself so that she can protect herself from me.
“This is an odd place.”
I let my eyes drift around the room and smile. “How so?”
“It’s themed for Halloween. The movie Halloween not the holiday.”
“It’s got a reputation for romance.”
Her golden-green eyes widen. “There’s no way that this is a romantic destination.”
“Oh, I beg to differ. Many a proposal has been made in this place.”
Shaking her head, she groans. “I would never say yes to a proposal in a place like this.”
“Nobody’s proposing tonight.”
She clears her throat and then sighs. “Well, that’s good. Too bad the other horses had to go home.
