Chapter 1

Jade

“Thereyougo, honey,”Maddison says as she places the glass in front of me. “Get that down you.”

I frown at my friend as she takes a seat across from me.

“This isn’t what I ordered, Maddison. You know I don’t drink.”

“Oh, stop it,” Maddison says and rolls her eyes. “Just try something new. Anyway, it’s non-alcoholic.”

“Really?” I peer at the cream-colored drink with a dark chocolate-like substance at the bottom. “What is it?”

“Pina colada.”

“That is alcoholic, Maddison.”

Maddison giggles as she picks up her glass, slurping through the straw.

“Don’t freak out. It’s called a virgin pina colada. Mock rum syrup, pineapple juice, and coconut milk. No alcohol in sight.”

I don’t know about that. I’m not comfortable drinking something I didn’t ask for. But I’m not in the mood to fight too much. I just want to do something that makes me forget the bastard I had told to get the hell out of my apartment. If I’m lucky, he’ll be gone when I get back from the bar. If he isn’t…

I haven’t thought that far ahead. I just want him gone.

Sighing, I pick up the glass and take a sip. It’s actually not too bad. I didn’t think pineapple juice and coconut milk would work together, but it does. I can tolerate it, although I prefer my usual fizzy sodas.

“There!” Maddison says, looking smug. “I knew you would like it.”

“I don’t know about that.” I take another sip and lower the glass. “But it’s a free drink, and I can’t really complain about that.”

“You got it. There’s nothing wrong with trying something new at a time like this.” Maddison tosses her braids over her shoulder. “I won’t give you alcohol, I promise. Although you can’t blame me if I did, given the circumstances.”

“I think it’s best that I keep a clear head,” I sigh, sitting back in my chair. It creaks under my weight as I move. “Given that I’ve got to go back to the apartment later to make sure Nate’s gone and is not coming back.”

Maddison snorts. “He’d better be gone. I won’t be very nice if he is still there. Do you think he will be?”

“I have no idea.”

I thought I knew my boyfriend and how he ticked. Evidently, I didn’t know him at all. While we were planning for a wedding, he was dating someone else. If the stupid girl hadn’t reached out to tell me that she would take my place in his life, I wouldn’t have been any the wiser. I genuinely thought we were going to be together forever. Now that has been ripped apart.

The problem was, though, once I told him it was over and that he needed to get the fuck out of my life, he wouldn’t leave. He was adamant that we were meant to be forever, while the other girl was his side piece and nothing serious. I don’t believe that for a second, and I’m not about to be made to look like an idiot. It’s just an annoyance that he’s not on the same page as me. Even as I left with Maddison, he begged me to stay and talk it over.

“I can’t believe the nerve of the guy,” Maddison says as she shakes her head. “God, what idiot thinks he can cheat and get away with it? And what was that he was shouting as we were leaving? It sounded like a jumbled mess.”

“It pretty much is. I think I’ve got it straightened out.” I rub my fingers against my temples. “He was with me for three years; he started dating this Miranda last year. He was going to marry me while being with her, and he was still going to sleep with her while I was his wife. Miranda decided that she wasn’t going to be the side chick anymore and called to let me know, and she could have Nate to herself. Now Nate says it was just a fling, and he loves me.”

Maddison scoffs.

“He can’t be serious! Does this Miranda chick know that he said that?”

“She was there when Nate walked in on us arguing.”

While Nate tried to soothe me, the look on Miranda's face would have been comical if the situation hadn’t been so shocking. She genuinely thought she and Nate would be together instead, but to be told she was a bit of fun in bed and nothing more…I know I would have been hurt if I heard that as well.

I don’t want to be a part of that mess anymore.

My phone bleeps again, buzzing across the table. I don’t need to turn it over to look; I know who the message is from. Maddison arches an eyebrow.
