“I take it that’s him?”
“More than likely. It’s been going off quite a bit since we sat down.” I scowl at my phone. “I shudder to imagine how many messages are there and what bullshit he’s spewing now.”
“Why don’t you just block him?”
“I need to be sure that he’s out of my apartment and returned everything I loaned him, and then I’ll block him.”
I hate that I have to say that. I hate knowing I gave this scumbag money to help with some bills when they came at the wrong time. I’m sure he spent it on his girlfriend, and I intend to get all of it back. Although, knowing Nate, he was going to make it difficult.
“I can make this a legal case, you know,” Maddison says. She picks up the food menu. “If he doesn’t do it quietly, we can send him a letter saying you’ll sue him in court to get your money back.”
“You would do that?”
“Pro bono. Just this once.” Maddison winks. “Anything for my bestie.”
I’ve never felt so relieved to have a lawyer as a best friend. Initially, I never understood why Maddison, the smartest girl in high school, would be friends with me, the bookworm who got average grades and preferred to bury her nose in a book than interact with people. We shouldn’t have worked, and yet we do. I couldn’t ask for a better friend than Maddison.
I certainly need her help now. Nate is enough for anyone to go mad with his persistence. I found it endearing when we were together, but now it’s not something I want to deal with.
“I’ll think about it.” I manage to smile at my friend. “I just want him to get out first. He doesn’t deserve to be in my apartment after what his side piece told me.”
“If he hasn’t gone, do you want me to call a few friends to get him out?”
“That might need to happen. Nate’s very stubborn, and I’m not about to move him on my own.” I shake my head, slumping further down in my chair. “I can’t believe I never saw any of this. How stupid am I not to realize he was cheating on me?”
“It’s not about being stupid or not. He’s just very cunning.”
“Doesn’t that amount to me being stupid?”
“Honey, you’re not stupid. That bastard is stupid for doing something so disgusting to you.” Maddison’s voice had a tone of finality about it. “He threw three years away because of one little slut. That’s it.”
I don’t respond to that. I know I should be angry at Miranda for being the other woman and sneering at me when she believed she was the number one woman in Nate’s life. She strode in thinking she was doing the right thing to get rid of the fiancée, her arrogance pretty blinding and impressive. But I can’t bring myself to be angry at her beyond the outburst earlier. She was just as much a victim of Nate’s charm as I was. If it hadn’t been for her, I would have been none the wiser about my future husband.
Now knowing that I was going to marry a cheater makes me sick to the stomach.
“Anyway,” Maddison went on, turning over the menu and looking at the back, “you and I are going to have something to eat, and then we’re going to do some miniature golf.”
“Miniature golf?” I can’t help but laugh. “At a time like this?”
“Why not? You need to do something silly to take your mind off that idiot. Hopefully, by the time that’s done, he’s gone. If he’s not, you can stay the night at mine, and we can eat lots of ice cream while watching scary movies.”
Not for the first time, I feel like I don’t deserve a friend like Maddison. She’s just amazing.
“Anyway, we’ve got a lot to talk about besides an idiot who can’t keep it in his pants,” Maddison declares. “Don’t forget we’re going to the ski resort for Carmen’s birthday party this weekend. Three days of skiing and partying in the evening. That’s got to be more fun than what we’re doing right now.”
“Oh. Right.” I had forgotten about that. “The birthday party. Ski resort.”
“Did you seriously forget?”
“Maddison, what’s happened to me today? I’m surprised I can remember anything right now.”
“Fair point.” Maddison runs a finger down the meals on the laminated menu. “But I think it would be a perfect opportunity for us to get away and have some fun. You love skiing.”
“I do.” I take the menu from my friend and look at it myself. “While that can be a good distraction, you’ve forgotten that Nate will also be there. I can’t really get away from him.”
“But if you talk to Carmen about it, she’ll make sure to uninvite him, won’t she?”
“I doubt it. She’s the one who introduced us in the first place.”
